I had that happen years ago with a computer part vendor.

 

Usually what happens is a spammer discovers an email distribution list. They send one email and everybody on the list gets it.

The vendor sets this up for efficient marketing, send one email and reach hundreds or thousands of customers.

 

The problem really goes wild when everybody on the list starts responding to the list.

Low life spammers love these things.
