AK Mags/ Most dependable

Recommended Posts

In addition to the factory 10 round Saiga mag which I tend to prefer at the range, I have new steel Bulgarian mags with plastic followers and surplus East German mags.

The Bulgarian mags are good but the East German ones seem to rock and lock in to place just slightly more easily than the Bulgarian mags.

Never had any feeding issues, FTF's, jams or anything with any of the above mags. It's a newer rifle with 500rds give or take through it.

GUYS,

BEEN DOIN' AK'S SINCE ABOUT '85, GOT A NUMBER OF THE CHINESE FLATBACKS BACK THEN, PLUS SOME OF THE "YUGO-CHINESE" MAGS THAT AIM HAD A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO.

GOT A NUMBER OF THE HUNGARIAN 20 RND TANKERS TO GO WITH THE C-39 CENTURION PISTOLS, AS THEY ADD TO THE CONCEALABILITY FACTOR.

HAVE ONE CHINESE 20RND MAG THAT I PICKED UP YEARS AGO, THAT IS ACTUALLY FOR THE SELECT-FIRE SKS, AS I UNDERSTAND IT.

THE ONLY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN IT AND THE HUNGARIAN 20'S IS THAT THE CHINESE MAG HAS A VERY "FAT" RIB ON THE BACK, AS OPPOSED TO THE THINNER RIB.

Like some others here the 20rd hungarian mag. are the way to go. I picked up a bunch 2 years ago for

13 bucks. Back then it still was a little steep but its what I wanted. I wound up with about 60 like new mags

. I use the tapco and promags on the range. I also have a few Yugo BHO mags that feed really well.

When I bought my 75 rnd Chinese drum on Ebay (years ago), the seller sent me a bonus, 4 5rnd, 4 20 rnd, and one 30 rnd. All Chinese steel magazines with rib.

The 30 rnd wobbles but, they all function 100%.

Just cleaned up the yugos I got from psa and they were covered in cosmoline but half a can of wd-40 later they were clean. They fit extremely well in my saiga I am suprised at how tight actually, the mags are brand new and need some brake in rounds but seem to feed reliably racking rounds through it to test the bho which works just fine. All in all quality mags for 12 bucks a piece, hmmm. wonder if they have more.

Surplus mags seem to be good generally (not that I've been in a 'battle-test' situation), but I got a steel mag before where the follower tilted consistently after loading about 15 rounds.  I couldn't resolve the problem and had to scrap it.  I believe it was Korean made, but not sure.  It came with my CAI 7.62.   =_=

Korean mags are not surplus. They're crap new-production non-milspec mags that happen to be made out of steel.

Side note, we need a mag thread sticked with the following:

"Surplus steel mags that are Russian, East German, Chinese, Hungarian, Bulgarian, Romanian, Yugoslavian or Polish - buy these."

All mags need to be inspected, cleaned, and tested before relying on them.

I've seen plenty of surplus mags that look new on the outside and end up being full of cosmoline or even badly rusted from the inside.

Be thorough and make sure they work before stashing them away and they'll last you a lifetime.

Great range mag's not for my collection. Although some were nice enough to add to my collection. I finally got around to cleaning the 20 that I got from Apex, had to work on a few to get them to work but still very nice for the price.

Pro mag, tapco, surefire (sgm).

You're joking, right?

I have never seen the need to use anything other than Comblock surplus steel mags.  They are reasonably priced and the most durable and reliable of all AK mags.  Sure they are heavy, but Saigas are light, so it all evens out. 032.gif
