Ordered a Saiga

Recommended Posts

Traded my ruger mini 30 in today and ordered a IZ240.

Will be doing the conversion soon, just deciding on what stock to get, leaning towards a folder, but not 100%.

I have a question about the muzzle brake....

WHat would be the easiest way to put a AK74 muzzle brake on?  Cutting the shroud off the barrel and threading..... or what?

If you chime in with an idea, please let me know what parts I'd need, since Im somewhat new to the russian side of weapons.

The proper way would be to cut off the Saiga Front Sight Block (FSB) and install a pre-threaded Bulgarian FSB and 74 brake.

You would need..

Dremel or hacksaw

Drill and bits

Bulgy FSB

Brake

Detent Pin

Detent Pin Spring

Two retaining pins (or drillbit shanks or nails, I've used both, no problems)

Just finished my first (and last) full 74 Bulgy Build, after two Saiga conversions. It wasn't easy or cheap but, "I made this".

5.45 recoil is minimal compared to 7.62, with better accuracy

All calibers have their place.

I love it. For a super accurate semi-auto, 5.45 works great!

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies.

After looking, I do believe Im going to leave the gas block alone and just run the tapco saiga forearm.

I do want a muzzle brake, so would buying this:

http://www.k-var.com/shop/AK-167B.html

http://www.k-var.com/shop/AK-141B.html

http://www.k-var.com/shop/AK-025B.html

be the easiest way?

Now, to anyone that's done it this way, would all I do is,

1, remove FSB

2, attach new FSB... (How do I make sure it's aligned properly?)

3, drill through the new FSB holes, and place pins?

Once pins are hammered through, do you just cut off the extra with a dremel?

Indexing the FSB can be done several ways. You should not have to cut off the pins after they are installed. What you have linked should work as long as you get the FSB with the detent pin and spring with it.

K-VAR doesn't include the  detent pin, and the detent springs with the FSB. you have to buy them separately.

I just got a FSB from them a few days ago, and it came with the pin and springs already installed.

The last FSB I picked up from them had it as well. It should state in the description wether or not it had it, as not all of them do.

When you install it (flush with end of your barrel) you will need to drill the barrel for the new pins. The new FSB won't line up with the existing slots.

Use a end-mill or make one by (almost) squaring off the end of an undersize bit and then reshape so that it can bite the metal again.

You can wrap the bit with tape to protect your FSB holes.

Go slow and check your work constantly.

Many tutorials out there.
