jrance@iacwds.com 716
Has anybody used this to clean your suppressor baffles; specifically .22LR aluminum baffles. Sounds like a great idea, thought I would check. 1911
Shandlanos 1,470
I haven't, but I've cleaned a stainless Mite in an ultrasonic gun cleaner before. I vaguely remember somebody mentioning ultrasonic cleaners and aluminum being a bad idea.
gunfun 3,931
It's what most of the factories do if you send it in for service. However, ultrasonic can ratlle loose some paints, and things like glue if there is any threadlocker in there.
Spacehog 2,218
Ultrasonic will not affect aluminum any more than any other metal. I have customers that use ultrasonic cleaning tanks on production aluminum automotive parts all the time. I would venture that any issues with aluminum and ultrasonics is more likely due to the cleaner solution used than the machine. Stay away from cleaners that are too caustic (generally above a pH of 9.0 unless inhibited) and pHs that are too low (less than a 5.5) Both have a tendency to chew on the aluminum at a microscopic level. Also if you see a black or grey film developing on the aluminum while cleaning, it is smut from the alloy and is a sure sign you are etching the aluminum parts. A good neutral cleaner like simple green would work well.
jrance@iacwds.com 716
Thanks for the input gentlemen. My 5.56 & 7.62 baffles are stainless so I'm not concerned with those. The aluminum baffles were the worry. Guess I'll check the Ph of my solution and see how things go. 1911
