XD45 7,124
As a ground troop when the hogs were overhead you felt invincible. Yes other planes can do the job almost as well, but the hog drivers took it up close and PERSONAL. http://news.yahoo.com/end-looms-us-air-force-39-39-warthog-115956604.html And be sure to read the comments. gunfun 3,931
They've been trying for decades. I'd bet they will get fired up when needed anyway. Since the gov't doesn't want to pay for new planes, they've been using a lot of the mothball fleet.
gunfun 3,931
It looks like the whole warthog program costs the same as 24 raptors purchase price.

mancat 2,368
They scrapped the tooling and dies for the manufacture of replacent parts for the Warthog decades ago, essentially sabotaging any future it may have had. They think the F35 is gonna fill the same roles, hilarious.
DLT 1,646
And in a few months/years, when they need a close ground support attack plane again, the same fools who pushed for this will all try and blame somebody else for it. Just wait. Karma has a hard on for the warthog.
Ronin38 2,117
"This is a plane for large land combat engagements and for the foreseeable future, you probably won't face too many of those and there's also the budget pressure." "...then gave up in the face of a series of unexpected deployments..." HHHEEELLLLOOOO!!! Anyone in Washington actually paying attention ?!?! Anglo-Saxon monosyllabic cuss words...
haugpatr 972
At least they can't be used against us! I am surprised they didn't try and give them to the DHS.
Sim_Player 1,939
Give them to the marines.

mancat 2,368
It's possible.. The production numbers on the A-10 and B-52 are about the same, and the B-52 is still not going anywhere despite multiple attempts to replace it. I was obsessed with the B-52 for a while when I was a little kid. What a beautiful plane... I hope I can catch a ride on one some day. Plus, it can do this: Edited December 12, 2013 by mancat
Cobra 76 two 2,677
Yeah they will have to keep em on standby because there will never be another plane as badass as the Flying Bathtub.... the 30 mm Gatling gun with a bulletproof plane built around it. There will just never be anything else like it.... Some cool video footage of it in action... BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRP!! Slow motion video of 30mm impacts coming in. Anything to this?? http://www.funker530.com/a-10-warthogs-life-extended-until-2028/
mancat 2,368
I like how one of the chief complaints in the original article is that the A-10 is "slow" - it demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of its role and what qualities are required to achieve it effectively. The fact that this is coming from an AF officer is ridiculous. Can the F-35 loiter at low speed continuously while maintaining high maneuverability like the A-10 can? If it could, then maybe the AF would hate the F-35 too.
scoutjoe 276
Cheaper than new, effective and held in high regard by the fine people that depend/use it. Makes perfect sense to scrap it... /end snooty sarcasm
XD45 7,124
The long loiter and low altitude maneuverability make it highly effective even when it's not shooting. The presence of hogs overhead has a strong psychological effect on both sides.
Capt Nemo 882
Almost had a GAU-8 reciever from a crash till someone took a torch to it a week before the ATF transfer came in. Govt lost $5200 on the deal! Was sad when Madison got switched to F-16's. Loved watching them shoot at Hardwood AGR!

Rhodes1968 1,638
Its been said the A10 was the Tiger Tank perfected. Think its a good point. The Tiger was built to engage and defeat tanks and did so very well, was hard as hell to kill, and saved a lot of its crews. Damn fine aircraft!

Govt lost $5200 on the deal! Was sad when Madison got switched to F-16's. Loved watching them shoot at Hardwood AGR! My buddy krisfox bought a retired (for whatever reason...) barrel from one while he was still in Iraq in '09. You should have seen the look on the UPS man's face the day I watched him struggle to carry that big heavy SOB up to my door in the long PVC pipe it was packed in for shipment, waited til he handed it over to me, then grinned and told him what he had just delivered...LMAO!!! He kinda stared at me in disbelief, slowly backed away... then turned and walked away looking very puzzled... and maybe a little worried... This is it here..... I've always had a thing for the Gau 8 Avenger. What an awesome weapon. When they put wings on it and made it fly I'm just sorry but anything that badass needs to stay in service.
Lone Eagle 839
What gave it the psychological effect was the rounds actually impacted before you heard the burp. Macbeau...
Ronin38 2,117
How many other countries build/maintain the C-130? Even if WE "end" the program, there's only about a bazillion of them in-service globally. I don't think they'll vanish during my lifetime. I was just watching one doing maneuvers overhead yesterday, in fact.
Dad2142Dad 6,559
Amazing people don't even think about the physiological impact against ones enemies and the lift for our troops. Just like the battle wagons, the A-10 was not sexy enough to survive. I can't think of anything scarier to the enemy than hearing 16" shells hitting their position followed by A-10 strafing followed by Marines..................
Ronin38 2,117
^ Throw in a Spectre Gunship there and you have the perfect combination! (Speaking of C-130's...)
Capt Nemo 882
You should see what a barrel like that does in a crash.....twisted pretzels! Most sickening thing you'd ever want to see happen to such a beautiful gun! Wish I could have gotten that intact reciever! Would have been fun to rebuild and mount on a flatbed semi trailer. (she'd never fly again) Guys at the range would positively shit!!!!
Shandlanos 1,470
Wish this meant we'd see a whole bunch of 30mm Vulcan barrels show up on the surplus market. I'd love to build a 30mm Vulcan Mauser. Edited December 13, 2013 by Shandlanos

Ronin38 2,117
That article is from 2010... Is the LAAR in service now? A friend of mine back in college (1990) flew the OV-10 Broncos. He enjoyed it.
