"China wants to go to the moon for geostrategic reasons and domestic legitimacy," "GEOSTRATEGIC" IS AN INNOCUOUS WAY OF SAYING " AN IMPREGNABLE MILITARY FORTRESS, DUG DEEPLY INTO THE MOON ROCK, AND HEAVILY ARMED WITH OFFENSIVE WEAPONS; LASERS, DIRECTED ENERGY WEAPONS, AND PARTICLE BEAM WEAPONS, WITH WHICH TO INTIMIDATE, AND WHEN THAT DOESN'T WORK, DECIMATE NATIONS THAT CHINA DEEMS THEIR ENEMY". If you genuinely believe this, your knowledge of practical technology is laughable. Kinetic weapons are a lot scarier. The most efficient way I can think of to weaponize space - find asteroids that are in orbit around the sun, send a small spacecraft to hang out near the asteroid and, thanks to its mass, gradually shift the asteroid's orbit until it is in a path that will cause it to strike the Earth when and where you want it to. Using this method, you can easily deliver strikes the magnitude of a nuclear attack without all the messy nuclear fallout, and with plausible deniability - "must've been a random space rock that smashed D.C."
mancat 2,368
China landed a rover on the moon.. That's cute. We currently have multiple generations of rovers on Mars, and put actual humans on the moon. China, you guys can put objects in space. We already knew that, congratulations. And sorry Jess but I have to agree. The technology to weaponize the surface of the moon is nonexistant. The energy requirements for weapons are staggering, and space vehicles operate with finite energy sources that only support low-current, low-voltage requirements. Even with advancements in nuclear fuels and solar arrays, not happening any time soon. The payload capacity to get the amount of materials there needed for such a project alone is staggering. Shandlanos 1,470
When we finally start doing more than visiting the moon, we have no choice but to utilize resources in-situ. The moon is covered in what is mostly oxygen, aluminum and titanium. There's also plenty of hydrogen - this means we can harvest structural metals, breathable oxygen, and even water, from lunar soil (regolith). If we had to bring everything every time, the best we could ever hope for would be a small, extremely expensive outpost. Thanks to the presence of hydrogen and oxygen, it also means rocket fuel is available in abundance. It's possible that a profitable venture could sell rocket fuel on the moon, in lunar orbit, and especially in Earth orbit to both commercial and governmental space agencies. One of the biggest limitations preventing us from sending people to Mars and back is the sheer quantity of fuel needed to accelerate and decelerate the craft, then land, re-orbit the craft, and once again accelerate and decelerate to get it back to Earth. If, instead of launching all of that fuel from the surface of the Earth, at astronomical expense, you could purchase the majority of your fuel in Earth or Lunar orbit - suddenly human exploration of Mars becomes feasible. I'd love to see a commercial venture make the attempt. Edited December 15, 2013 by Shandlanos
