New Saiga 223 Trouble

Recommended Posts

Got a new Saiga 223. This is Saiga M1 with detachable stock (got welded), and heavy long barrel. Here is the kicker. Beryl mags do NOT lock up. I mean they fit into the magwell but as you "rock them back" they get stopped about 7mm from they are supposed to be locked in. the mag is SLANTED in the magwell, and much more so than it was due to a mag locking tab. Any ideas?

Okay, the mag clears interdiction tab without problem. If I have to file mag catch, I will have to file half of it. It seems to be hitting something INSIDE the receiver. Possibly a crossbar. Funny thing that did NOT happen on my Vepr 223 conversion or my previous Saiga 223 conversion

You shouldnt have to file half the catch. Thats way too much. Disassemble the weapon and see what its coming into contact with when you insert a mag, and go from there. Dont mod the gun to fit the mags though, as it will leave you with a mag specific weapon.

Thats odd that its hitting the center support rivet. You should only have to mod the front feed lip of the mag.

ETA: It sounds like the front feed lips are hitting the bottom of the front trunnion. Heres a video in this thread describing it, if you didnt already know.

Sounds like the front trunnion. Don't all surplus mags need the mag reprofiled at the feed lips in front to clear the front trunnion to lock in?

Yes. This is what it sounds like to me. I figured he had already done so, but after thinking about it, Im not so sure, wich is why I posted the link with the video.

NO FILING NEEDED ON THE GUN.

Beryl mags need to be modded before they will lock in. They are designed to lock in to an AK-74 trunnion. Saiga .223 has a hybrid AKM trunnion. Unmodified, the front of the Beryl mag feed lips will hit the bottom of the trunnion locking lugs, preventing them from fully rotating forward and locking in.

You basically file down the front of the feed lips on the magazine until the Beryl magazine matches the feed lip profile of the Saiga factory magazine. This is very easy to do if you have them side by side.

You do not want to fit them too tightly - you want the Beryl mags to lock in nice and smooth. Too tight and you can bend the steel reinforcements in the mag body, which can cause misfeeds.

Once they are modded they will snap right in with no modifications needed to the rifle.

Please see my video:
Bonus points if you can spot the vintage ALF trading card

Or if you just like pictures, you will need to mod your Beryl mags in this fashion. Original mag on the left, modified mag on the right. Notice the difference in front feed lip height:

I decided to say "The hell with it" saiga stayed unmodified and I got 10 SGM mags for it. PROBLEM SOLVED. I like hunting stock better than pistol handle anyways. I was taught how to shoot with SKS, so to me hunting stock is more natural than pistol grip

Most likely your issues are a combination of the front of the mags needing a little material removed to clear the front trunnion and your mag catch needing filed down  on yourunmodified Saiga.

These are the same mods made to the Bulgarian mags.

Mancats video, is an excellent video showing this.

Thank you but THAT Saiga will stay unmodified. I got 10 SGM mags for it. I like SKS style stock better than pistol grip stock anyway. When I started to learn how to shoot it was first - 5.6 rimfire rifle, shotgun, SKS, they all had that SKS/Garand style stock, I am very used to it, and like it better than "assault rifle style" pistol grip.  It is the OTHER Saiga 223, that already came modified that I need help with.
