Mikhail *literally* at the drawing board!

Recommended Posts

This page from the magazine alone was worth my NRA membership fees to get American Rifleman...

Talk about way cool! This is the "opening shot" to an article about The Godfather's passing.

SOMEONE with the proper skill needs to make a "Keep that shit off my AK" out of this...

Very cool picture and thank you. Now for some hydro codeine and good wine statements.

"About 1000 years from today on a colony planet about 1000 parsecs away, (3120 light years about) in that direction, (point that-a-way) when the struggling human colonists discover that the evil Draconian Empire Polseen space invaders are going to invade and that they have only 5 years to get ready and they have practically nothing to defend themselves with......(wait for it)....they will discover in ancient computer memories the complete blueprints on how to manufacture, with some high grade steel, common 1mm sheet metal and cheaper plywood, an answer to their prayers ......the AK47 based Saiga 12 shotgun.....in full auto......shooting full power mag slug loads". Wow!! Enough for now. And that is your entertainment for today. HB of CJ (crazy old coot) smile.png

My response to the trite sentiment above.

There was another one of him somewhere looking pretty proud of an AK with CAA furniture on it.

Hmmm...  Seems he may actually be a little pissed GFhaha.gif

He was probably tired of filthy western immoral punks begging for his autograph. I'd certainly be guilty...

Yet he's smiling.

He worked or at least was pleased to put his name on many many updates and variations. I've seen videos with him bragging and showing off updated 100 series guns with aftermarket plastic rails every where. Stuff I would consider cheap tacky junk. Not that one man's like or dislike validates or invalidates the usefulness of any feature, but it is pretty clear that M.K. Didn't look at the first few generations of AK as a finished product, but rather a good draft in an ongoing process of creation refinement and innovation (and a healthy dose of copying too).

The truth is that every country which has had the resources has updated the AK, and even the Russian competition and SWAT type market really like modular AK stuff that is about the same as what you get on an AR. To believe otherwise requires self delusion and denial.

The biggest thing I will take away from Mikail's life (even above the AK), is this:

"I sleep soundly. It's the politicians who are to blame for failing to come to an agreement and resorting to violence."

hugo schmeisser was standing in the back ground explaining how the gun works to MK. He was just a poster boy for the red machine. A way to say look this nobody a merger tank mechanic can become someone that can change the world all because communism is that great. And they couldn't let a nazi Take the credit he was due.

How about a frikkin huge-ass design team of well over 200 scientists and engineers (Mikhail and Hugo for sure, at least that we know of) including captured weapons experts and specialists from all over the world spending the better part of a decade working on it?

I'm not really sure how anyone could believe that the Soviet-Frikkin-Union would only have two guys working on this? Come on. It was a major weapons development project. They just elevated Mikhail so that they could have their own version of the brilliant independent inventor (John Moses Browning) who just came up with this shit on his own and laid it at the feet of the gov't that he loves so much without ever expecting any compensation for it because he's just such a great communist who loves the state that much.rolleyes.gif

Right. Fairy tale. Also, anyone else find it strange that so many of the cold-war era weapons programs have been declassified but not the post-WWII small arms development program? Kinda odd, right?

I expect the myth of Kalashnikov will persist for some time. The cult following is just too strong.

Now flame on!tongue.png

Amen. We do it with browning and stoner too. Obviously everyone works as a team building on prior ideas.

MK denied copying the browning <Model 8?> safety, but he obviously did.

true where would jobs and gates have gotten without people to help them, but they were the visionaries, gotta get past the whole commie thing, besides out of the people mentioned on this board he is probably the poorest money wise

Im just glad we have them, imagine if we lived in an ar-15 only world:(

John Force didn't build the race team by himself either...

Edwin Hubble had been dead for nearly 40 years when the telescope with his moniker was launched.

That doesn't mean they aren't heroes in those cultures.

Mikhail's name is on the gun as much as Hubble is on the telescope.

I'm sure history has forgotten many important others and I honor their contributions as well.

edit: OMG... That Hubble video sucks... Don't watch more then 5 minutes of it! (I was waiting to have my dinner and watch the entire thing with MUCH excitement... I couldn't get through more than 15 minutes). Anyone have a video about the actual manufacturing (and failure... I know why...) of the telescope?

Imagine, without the AK we'd all be carrying around M14's.
second that or an fn fal, but I am a form follows function guy and thank god the ak was invented. Its a blue collar firearm that can be built of a reciever made from a shovel head and the handle as a buttstock and it is minute of man accurate to a few hundred yards, they just work, kind of like the old toyota 4 banger motors, you can kill them but is it really worth all that effort. they are no heavier than an m14 to me, very similar, thing is though you can manufacture alot of ak's for what most other countries main battle rifles cost. Hopefully we will get even more as the years go and prices will go down some more. one can hope

That look like the new AK-12 which the Russian army is looking at adopting which uses features copied from the AR-15 variants the US military is using which made ergonomic inprovements to a great rifle including the Picatinny rail and a more ergonomic safety.

When Mikhail Kalashnikov visited the US he met with Bill Ruger, Eugene Stoner and he is shown posing with an AR while Stoner had an AK and with the late Uzi Gal designer of the Uzi SMG.

I wouldn't have any beef at all carrying an M-14 or FAL... AKs are just so affordable and such a good machine. FALs have me VERY interested though... UGLY and HEAVY as fuck though...

The FN-FAL failed miserably in the 1967 and 1973 Middle East wars where the Israeli soldiers threw away their FALs and Uzis for AKs.  The FAL did not do well in the desert environment and the Uzi lacked the range due to the 9mm round.

I don't live in the desert and the friends I have with FN-FALs LOVE THEM (other than the aforementioned weight.. they also got into them when mags were $3/ea and guns could be built for $300-400...)

Don't read me wrong at all... My chosen battle rifle is my AK (as cool as it is... I'm just wishing I wouldn't have gone with a Yugo if I genuinely needed to lug it around... VERY heavy) and I'm a strong believer in the platform. I'm just saying the M-14 and FN-FAL have a place in the world as well.. If you ever find me in the desert it will be because the GPS satellites failed and I ran out of 600 miles of range in my '74 GMC well beyond knowing I was going in the wrong direction.

Desert = Fuck a bunch of that for this fat boy...

The fal was issued by more nations than any other battle rifle ever at one time. Must be something right. And if I'm not mistaken they were used very heavily in Africa in the 1960s and 1970s.

Also there is a big difference in an army having issues and an individual user especially an American civilian shooter having issues. I'd say the average American shooter keeps their weapon as clean and well taken care of at least as well if not better in some instances than soldiers of foreign armies.

They are still heavily in use in South America as well. They earned the moniker "Right Arm of the Free World" for a reason. I'm quite fond of mine. IMHO, they performed well for everyone but the Israelis. Apparently sand is their ultimate downfall, even with the sand-cuts in the carrier.
