I am not interested in a full conversion, but I would like to get a pistol grip on my S12. I have seen the video and I really am not interested in dong this job myself. Where is a good place to send my gun for this job, and roughly how much would it cost? Thanks.

Balance and a nicer trigger pull for starters.  You'll also have easier access to the mag catch and BHO.  There is also a distinct advantage of getting up close and personal with the internal workings

To me it looks good. And you can still use your imported magazines that hold 5 or less, since you don't have any of the features unless you install the pistol grip..   I still suggest conversion. It

I see you're trying hard not to do the conversion.  We will equally try as hard to convince you to do it.  For the love of god, convert it!

You could go with something like this from this forums e-store http://www.saiga-12.com/proddetail.asp?prod=FST04DE

, or something similar from one of the great forum business members like CSS or MAA. Stocks like this or T6 style are being put up for sale often in this forums WTS section. You may have members in your area who will help you with the conversion if you would rather go the conversion/restoration process route to get rid of that factory trigger, which you should. Whatever you do, have fun with the gun; and you will eventually convert, they all do.

I like the looks of the KickLite Tactical Stock Kit for the factory set up gun. One question, will the recoil reduction feature cause cycling problems with the gun?

It depends on the gun, it does soak up energy used to cycle the bolt carrier. There are many threads on this exact subject, just gotta search em out.

OK, let me ask a real nooby question. What's the big advantage of converting the Saiga 12? All I really feel like I'd like to have is a pistol grip. A lot of the stuff I see in photos that people hang all over their Saigas doesn't interest me at all. I'm no Rambo. Mostly I like to target shoot. I did a little hunting as a boy, but not in a long time. I like shooting trap and skeet, but I haven't done that in quite a while either.

You'll be glad you converted if you do it. You could also take the easy way out (like I did lol ) and send it to someone. Jack Travers (JTEngineering) did mine. Excellent conversion and runs amazing.

I had never done a conversion. Read a few threads here, watched a couple of youtube vids, ordered some parts from CSS and three hours later one Saturday morning I was done. The only reason it took three hours is it was cold in the garage and when I touched up the paint it took it a while to dry enough to continue. It really is a pain free process that can be done with simple tools and minimal experience. The improvements in the areas of balance and trigger pull make it well worth the effort.

As noted above Jack Travers at JT Engineering is another great option if you don't want to work on it yourself. I sent mine to Jack after I did the conversion for his "reliability service" and am very pleased with the results.

Personally I do not think it is about looks, without the conversion the balance is all wrong and the trigger is absolutely terrible. When I got my gun in 08' I did what you are doing, I bought the pistol grip stocks for my .308 and s12, so I have experience with the gun in both configurations. It is not just a little bit better and looks better, it is a completely different gun. Take it from someone who knows and get that trigger out of that gun. The money I spent on the pistol grip stocks was a complete waste and are now buried in my basement under other bad decisions. I posted the stocks for sale here last year and no one wants them.

Yes just listen to these guys about converting it. Its not hard to do. The balance feels so much better. I went through the "im not converting phase" that lasted about 6 weeks and then I pulled it apart and was stuck with an unconverted tapco stock for the longest time.

I do, I will dig up the for sale thread here in a few.

Edit to add: http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?/topic/77600-fs-t6-stock-saw-grips-308-gas-tube-others/

I have not bumped the thread in a long time and the thread is two years old. I don't know what they sell for now and have not attempted to really push them due to me not wanting to have to find them, dig them out, and then have to package and ship them.

Don't dig them out now. I am still trying to decide which way to go. Thanks anyway.

Juuuust in case you need some more reasons/convincing about the PRACTICAL advantages of converting your Saiga...a large portion of the "Description and Photos" section of my website (saiga12conversions.com) is dedicated to just that very subject.  Besides the huge improvement in balance, converting your gun is the only way you can LEGALLY use a magazine with a capacity of over 5 rounds.

If you ever find yourself convinced to convert...I can get it done quick for you.

If you are worried about the gun looking "gaudy"...you can always go with a fixed black synthetic stock and keep the factory forend...the only real cosmetic difference would be the pistol grip hanging down.

Wow, so with a 10 round mag and an 8 round mag-I'm already illegal?  So, if I kept the factory forend  and went with the black synthetic stock, how much would I be looking at?

Yes.  A lot of folks run them on the factory configuration guns anyway.  Most of them have no idea that it is illegal.  But sticking anything that holds more than 5 rounds in an "imported" semi-auto shotgun automatically makes the gun contraband, and could get you in serious trouble.

When you have the gun converted, enough russian parts are replaced with USA-made parts so that the ATF no longer considers the shotgun to be "imported".

Great. Now I just bought an Izhmash magazine for over $100 and I can't even use it, as well as the 10 round AGP I've had for a while. I'm pissed! 've got a gun I've put a bunch of money in and have it running great and now I'm afraid to shoot it. Crap.

not trying to sound like di_k.

convert the thing and all problems solved its trigger, finger guard grip, stock, maybe puc.

you spent money for pauly do his thing with your bolt carrier. whats another 100.00 to 200.00 depending what kit you but and your time.

you spent 100.00 on a 8 round mag? but don't want to do conversion to shoot with 8,10,more size mags

its not hard its easy if you own drill & drill bits and maybe dremel tool and some time maybe 2hr max and another 1.5hr

reading how to do it and watching videos.

its easy ,were all here to help...if run into any problems CSS is your friend for conversion kit

Don't worry mate, there is a work around.  We just need to take a few russian parts off and replace them with usa made parts.

Let's look at changing out the...

  • trigger
  • hammer
  • disconnector
  • butt stock
  • forearm
  • usa made floor plate for that Izhmash mag (your agp mag counts as 3 usa made parts so it's overkill there)

But since there's work to do how about we just talk about converting it?

edited:  I forgot, maybe it's best to forget about changing out the floorplate and just replace the factory puc (ATF calls it a gas piston).
