Venom Tactical FSB/GB... I'm thoroughly pleased.

Recommended Posts

So I recently purchased a Venom Tactical FSB/GB combo... It's what Rifle Dynamics uses on their AK's, and it is a fantastic addition to any rifle that isn't focused on making a traditional AK. It really changes the handling characteristics of the rifle, and the sight picture is largely unchanged. The front post is about the same size as my Bulgarian front sight post. This bolts onto the rifle, and has a recess intended for pinning it. I trust it'll hold with just the screws, but I still pinned it with a 1/8" pin. Since you have to remove the FSB and GB to do a proper retainer, and don't need a press to install this, it seems like an EXCELLENT solution. The windage is adjusted by simply turning the screw that the post sits on, and elevation can be adjusted with a file (they say they make it intentionally on the tall side). Overall, it's a simple, elegant solution that I've been wanting for years. I can get some better pics and some close-ups if anyone is interested, but this thread is both an afterthought, as well as an excuse to show off some, so they're not the BEST pics. I just shot it today, and am so happy with the whole thing, so I thought I'd share. biggrin.png  Yes, I need to thread the barrel, yes, that's a homemade overtravel stop behind the trigger, and yes, I need to refinish it! As soon as my FWS47 brake and T1 topcover for the handguard gets here, I'll finish it up.

Nice work !  Somewhat looks like my M-10 from Atlantic. Do you have a hyd. press  to remover and reinstall items ?

Thanks! And yeah, I have a Harbor Freight 20 Ton, but honestly, if you were just going to use the Venom GB/FSB, you could dremel/pound off the old GB and FSB, and just slide this on. It fits loose enough that you can just move it by hand, then you torque the screws down. That's where I think people could really like this.. they don't really need tools.

And I do like the M10 FSB, I just never could find one for sale. Plus, I like the look of the Venom just a little more.

Cool thread, I'm considering going this route. Are you thinking of making the barrel shorter and pinning the muzzle break?

I really want to, but I'm in no hurry to take the barrel out and pay for it to be done. I mean, it'd run me about $100, but $100 for 2" is... eh. I might still do it one of these days, though.

If my barrel ends up being threaded already I may go this route.  My FSB is pinned, not dimpled which should help removal.  How hard was the gas block to get off?

Not hard at all. Getting the longer pin out is the hardest part (tip, cutting it down first will really help... it kept bending when I was driving it out). I used a press to slide the old gas block off, but you could use a dremel and just cut the gas block off. A mallet should work too. Getting the Venom on is super easy, though. It's loose and will just slide by hand.

Also, this is how the rifle turned out. Ditched the MI rail and K-Var stock for an Ultimak and RDAK adapter.

I'm sold, thanks for the inspiration ;looked for Venom Fsb beginning of the year and couldn't find them. Now I'm all in , let u know how it goes! My original sight post is dimpled and has chunk of barrel shroud left from threading it so any advice? Thinking of cutting? Gb is pinned, cool finished pic hope mine looks that good.

Inebriated, can undo me a favor and measure the lop with the RDAK FCS combo. I was thinking of putting together that exact setup, but was having a hard time estimations the lop.

Also did u sight the rifle with the Bolton gas block? Curious as to how hard it is to zero by file.

Thanks man, I look forward to seeing it!

Your best bet for removing the FSB is to just cut it off.... You can drill out the dimples, but if you're not going to hang onto the FSB, a dremel and patience is the easiest. Same with the gas block. If you do want to keep them, then you'll have to drill out the dimples on the FSB (which I've not done), and press or whack both the GB and FSB off of the barrel. It's kind of a job if you're going to go the whacking route, but takes 5 minutes if you've got access to a press or are going to just cut 'em.

No problem, it's 13" even. For reference, my Warsaw-length K-VAR stock LOP is 12.75" and my NATO-length K-VAR is 14.25". What I love about the RDAK/FCS combo is that it doesn't feel that different than any other AK... it's just got a wider footprint on your shoulder, better cheekweld, and raises my cheek just so that I am consistent when I bring the rifle up.

And I actually didn't file anything. I think I may have adjusted the rear sight elevation, but I zeroed the Aimpoint and then adjusted the irons so that the dot was sitting on top of the front post. So far, I've not had issues zeroing at anything between 25-100 yards.

Thank you! The Ultimak model is the M1B and the handguard is a Russian K-Var lower, and a Russian lower handguard retainer from K-Var as well. It was $40 for both, since I didn't get the US-made handguard (still 922r compliant). Big benefit to having the Venom is that it was a breeze to install the lower handguard retainer. Pop the pin, undo the screws, and you can just slide it off by hand. Installs right back into place when you're done. The whole setup is something like 10oz lighter than with the MI rail.

Oh man I suck at numbers...

Let me put it this way... At 100 yards prone, using the magazine as a rest, I am able to hit an 8" steel plate consistently with sub 1 second split times. The dot just stays where you put it. It's noticeably more effective than the '74, even though the '74 is a great comp. It's still got some push, there's considerably less muzzle rise. I'll have to get out and do some actual quantifiable comparisons... I did a side-by-side, but nothing with split times and shot spread.

I have an extra one of these Venom integrated sight/gas blocks for sale if anyone is looking? It's still new and never been installed. I will let it go for $75 shipped.

Also, to the OP, rifle is looking real nice!
