Does my .308 have a threaded barrel?

Recommended Posts

So I've decided to put a muzzle break on my .308 with the 16" barrel and I've been weighing all my options. Ideally I'd like to go with one of the threaded options, and if for some reason that's not feasable I'd like to go with the SGM bolt on break but I dont know if that will work because I'm pretty sure I dont have the required 3/16 of an inch barrel protrusion. While reading other threads people talk about their FSB being pinned but I cant see where mine would be pinned and was wonderig if there was any chance that my barrel is threaded. Heres a couple pictures, theyre not the best quality sorry. Any info is appreciated.post-48709-0-88222200-1395780063.jpgpost-48709-0-39042700-1395780101_thumb.jpgpost-48709-0-02497300-1395780140_thumb.jpg

I doubt it is. Id look for a dragunov FH. They look sick on the .308. The only shitty thing is trying to find one. I havent been able to find a decent copy or the real thing in some time. But I havent looked very hard either.

Battlecomp is you want a brake, AAC Blackout if you want a flashhider. Both are spendy but make a huge difference in their respective capacities. Thread for AR10 muzzle devices and you will have tons of options.

if you like to do your own work and like buying tools, go to Dinzag and get his tools for the job. I did, it worked great and I got my flash/ break from cobra

I've got an a2 on mine abs it works great. What you should do it remove the front sight and move it back one pin them you can use tools from dinzag look him up. You need a TAT that's a tool to start the threads true to the bore then a die to hand tap the barrel. You should remove the front sight before ordering tools there are two different barrel sizes and you can go either 5/8x24 if you lucky or if you unlucky you have to do Luke 17mm

Whatever you do don't get something like an AAC brake it's so loud on a 16" 556 it would ring my ears through ear plugs and muffs. The A2 ar10 flash hider actually seems to knock for of the harsh blast of just the bare muzzle.

Thanks for all the good info, i order all my conversion parts from Dinzag so I'll go that route.

Brian is a really good guy, he has been very helpful to me and I've purchased many conversion parts from him over the years 032.gif

Red I bet that thing is loud huh? I always Thought "why do people complain about guns being loud?" Then I shot a16" 556 with an AAC brake and it rang my ears through two sets of ear pro. I was wanting that same brake on my s308 but after shooting it, I'd never buy one. In fact the guy took it off after a week. It did totally cut recoil not there's much on an ar15 but I could shoot doubles or triples and there was no recoil at all.

Those Battlecomps look nice but holy shit are they expensive! $230 for the base model, is it really that much better than other options?

Yes. Tames the muzzle rise much better than any other brake I've used, and is decent as a flash hider as well (even though that's not the designed use). If, as someone has suggested, he goes with the 74 brake - which was designed for a much less powerful round, by the way - he will likely have a huge flash signature.

Indeed it was but was also way over built and works, saving enough cash for a case of ammo. This assumes of course one gets a quality brake.

Going to get flash on a 16" anyway unless you reload with fast burning powder.

If one has the scratch to spend $200 more on the muzzle then by all means knock thyself out.

Well, there's a difference between a mild, indistinct flash and large balls of flame spitting out on both sides. However, I can't claim to know exactly what will happen on the 16.3 inch barrel with the Battlecomp. You can see how the BC performs on the 17.8 inch barrel in the video I posted above. Pretty well in my opinion. I know a friend who is about to get his 16 inch Saiga 308 back threaded from the gunsmith and wants to test the BC on it. I will add that to the video after our tests. We are also going to test the AAC Blackout on it, and on the 17.8" barrel Saiga.

Yeah it does reduce the flash but you can still see the streamers of powder still burning.

Of course that be could reduced with a more tuned load or longer barrel. The M44 is a case in point.

I just dont see the $200 extra but then I freely admit to being tight. Got other things to invest in like powder, brass, and bullets for that monster.

Still working on NV, if I ever get it right maybe I would be more interested in flash.

The A2 I use on my 16 308 cuts the flash tremendously compared to stock. I would feel vertu ripped off if I spent 200 on a flash hider. I still get some flash and sparks with cheap tula but with mag tech and federal is hardly any flash even at dusk.

This is where I make my usual pitch for spending the extra money on having the barrel lathe threaded by a gunsmith.  Threading the barrel is a one-shot deal (at least on the 16" Saiga), and if you do it with hand tools, you will be hosed if you later decide you want to mount a suppressor on it.  I had mine lathe threaded with 9/16-24 threads that are true to the bore axis, and mounted a YHM Phantom on it.  If I ever decide I want to send $200 to the ATF, my rifle is ready to go.  Since these are no longer a $299 rifle anymore, it's worth thinking about putting a little more into really getting it right.

Well it is the 308. and yes it is very loud.

It does get attention at the range.
