Yoshi 87
The funny part really is history always repeats itself, but we have yet as a human race to learn from the past. We live in the moment and whats good for us now. Forget the future or the others around you.....
pjj342 632
Im a big fan of skeptical, independent thinking. Too many people are perfectly content believing what they are told, having blind faith in the words they hear. Socially acceptable patterns of mental stagnation or gullibility have taken a huge toll on the critical thinking abilities of people in this country. We need many more like Mr. Sagan.

Socially acceptable patterns of mental stagnation or gullibility have taken a huge toll on the critical thinking abilities of people in this country. dude, that has been going on ever since civilization started in Mesopotamia, and it will continue to be that way when the earth blows up into a quazillion trillion little pieces of rock. what, just because we have a piece of parchment with high ideals and flowery words that changes anything? everything looks good when written down, put the human factor in and it's no different since we came out of the trees and formed groups. you're always going to have a few leading the rest around, thumping their chest to show who's the boss. only difference is they wear suits now, and instead of thumping their chest they make laws Sagan isn't saying anything new or earth shattering. DrThunder88 912
Sagan's point is that humanity's technological adolescence has made it more of a danger to itself than it has ever been. Furthermore, humanity has never been more able to resist the enemies of reason and control the power that the preceding, countless generations have bestowed on it. That ability to control is based on democratic principles. If the people do not keep themselves well-informed, then they or their representatives cannot but fail to appreciate the power that science and technology provide. Yes, leaders have a tendency to keep us unwashed masses uninformed, but in a society where the masses can be informed and choose their leaders, general ignorance becomes far more disconcerting. Ronin38 2,117
Yep, not enough "real" intelligence in our political "leaders" these days. I believe we need people who could be true Leaders of our country, to include Scientists, successful Businessmen, and experienced Military leaders. Unfortunately, all 3 of those kinds of people have been on the decline in our leadership since WWII, imo. As we've said here before- anyone intelligent enough to be a truly great leader for this country is also too intelligent to volunteer to get involved in Politics! Saigaczech 9
Back about 30+ years ago, when congress was still a little bit educated in science compared to our present congress, the scientific research funding requests had to be written at a 6th grade level. I shudder to think what it is like now. I know this as we were required to take classes in "technical writting" in our degree program at a science and engineering university (NMIMT) so we could dumb down technical papers and proposals for this target audience. This is why the US is so backwards and behind in general STEM knowledge, our government will not make a requirement to teach it and allows the fundemental religious right to include such hogwash as "intelligent design" into our schools. Further, while the rest of the world uses the SI or metric system, we are still using the outdated, archaic English system. Also the invasion of pseudoscience programming on TV to channels that actually were originally about science and technology (Science Channel, Discovery Channel, etc.) propagates the ignorance, superstition and fear of science, math and technology in our society. Rhodes1968 1,638
Life during the "endarkening" , and it is just getting started. As far as teaching hogwash in schools I can think of much more egregious examples than admitting science has no clear path to how things came to be.
