scattergun10 125
From what I understand the Saiga 5.45 with 20" barrel has a thicker barrel diameter than the 16". So, will the barrel on a 20" need to be tapered in order for a threaded 74 FSB to fit? I'm sure this has probably been discussed before, but I couldn't find anything specific in the forum search. jimdigriz 580
This is not an answer to your question, but a hopefully helpful suggestion. The choices for muzzle devices for the AK 74 front sight block are very limited. They tend to be either too heavy, too bulky, not very effective, or all three. My advice is to thread for the AR 15 standard threading, and then your options will open up nicely. You can also re-use the front sight block you already have.

jimdigriz 580
The standard 74 muzzle brake is not "too heavy, too bulky", and I have found it to be extremely effective. It is effective, but it is, taken together with the AK74 FSB, too heavy and too bulky compared to AR brakes that are equally as effective as well as being better at suppressing flash. You can get AR brakes that are an inch shorter and with less girth that perform better. And concerning weight, a couple of ounces doesn't seem like much, but a couple of ounces at the end of the barrel are felt far more than anywhere else. AR threading = lots of options AK74 FSB with brake = regret - for me, at least. And, if we are talking about flash hiders, there is not a single really good flash hider for the AK74 front sight block. But the AAC Blackout or Smith Vortex for the AR will pretty much completely snuff out all signs of a flash.
