Have a 0.689" OD (at the cut) 308 barrel I need to shorten and add a brake.

Any of you gurus like to chip in on the following please do.

What die should I use at this size?

Dinzag sells a M17x1 RH but lets face it options are extremely limited at that size.

Any help?

Best bet is to have a machinist turn it down and thread it on a lathe. My machinist had jaws big enough to set my s308 up without removing the barrel. What length barrel do you have and how short are you going to go? Also id suggest you go with something like a flash hider. The only true brake Ive shot was an aac brake and it was on a 16 556 and it would ring your ears through muffs. To me the loudness wasn't worth the cut in recoil.

The FSC 30 is an excellent break for 30.it's what I put on my s308, and the PSL builds I did with Keith at tac47. It was so effective I was able to dump four rounds into the test drum with no stock our pistol grip. And finished welding up receiver back plates with the same hand that day.

Rhodes1968 ill bet there is someone locally that could do the work. Look up machinist locally. Most machinists are into guns and would be willing to help if they can. Ask if they could set up an odd shaped part and turn between centers. And if you absolutely cant find someone dinzag sells a tool for a drill that will turn down the barrel to be able to us their hand tap set. And if you have no plans to ever use a silencer hand tapping should be fine.

I threaded a .670" muzzle with a 5/8"-24 die without any sort of trimming.  I don't know about .689 though.

I suspected that it would be possible to file a set flats around the muzzle, knock off the resultant corners on the second pass, and let the die do the rest of the work.  To go from .689" to .625", you'd only need to remove 1/32" from each flat.  That's just speculation though.

Most machine shops won't touch a gun with a ten foot pole, they all claim a "liability issue", I asked the guy that does some CNC work for us to engrave the end of my .45 ACP barrel in my Kimber with "Smile wait for flash". He's got one bad ass CNC mill that can just about wipe your butt, if you can program it, 4 axis and all that crap, but he took one look at it and just about crapped his pants. I had already talked with the guy that runs the mill and he was all fire up and ready to do it, but the boss shot him done, all because, he "didn't want it coming back on him if something BAD happened".  WTF

For my 308 Saiga.. I did a post a long time back (like 2009) on threading it..

I did the 17 DIE and TAT from Dinzag.. and in an email asked him if he could take a 5/8-24 brake/comp I wanted and redo it to 17.. and he did.. he's got the shop to do it..

I then received my brake/comp back within a week that just went right on..

He also has accounts with a few places and can just order the brake you want and do it from their..

Oh Ive done barrel work before but I now have two goals here, keep it simple and do it with what I have available.

Dinzag is making things easier and damn glad for it.

Yeah easier (cheaper also likely) to have others with more skill and tools do the work and any other time I might, but frankly this isnt the time to be shipping firearms around IMHO.

Besides afterwards I will have the skill and the tools to do the job as many times as I wish.

Later I will give turning down the barrel a go (with the scrap pieces of course) when I get a suitable drill press.
