5.45 Replacment Bolt in Saiga .223

Recommended Posts

So I know mancat and others have addressed that a 5.45 bolt fo a AK-74 can work in a Saiga with the caveat that slam fires could possibly occur. Is this the right part? Does anyone know a source for the besides K-Var?

Also if anyone knows where I can find an actual .223 bolt like this one, or wants to give a spare up.... Let me know!

I am getting ready to do a big project with a new Saiga 20" .223 from J&G and just wanted to make sure I had an extra bolt with all the money I  am putting into it, Thanks again!

Hold out for the 5.56 bolt from K-Var to come back in stock. I have spare 5.45 and 5.56 bolts and I can tell you that they are very obviously different from each other. The bolt face and extractor are different and the 5.56 bolt has a firing pin spring (as it needs to).

Yeah I would love to, but I think those Saiga .223 bolts they have listed were from back a few years ago when they were doing Saiga conversions and since they arent anymore, I wonder if they will ever again. I have called a few times in the past year and they said they were out of stock and wouldnt know if they would be getting more in again :(

I know lots of AK-74 kit bulds guys have rebarreled in 5.56 with the same bolts, but yeah the difference in spring loaded firing pins is noteworthy.

The Russian 5.56 bolt is the correct part. You have to watch out for the Bulgarian 5.56 bolts, they will NOT work. So far as I know, the Russian 5.56 bolt is unique.

Remember it will have to be checked for headspace, but I suspect it will be fine. Modern AK manufacturing consistency on the trunnion/bolt/barrel assy. seems high.

Since the Russian 5.56 bolt is out of stock will any 5.45 bolt work or whats the rule on these?

Russian, Bulgarian, E. German, Polish 5.45 bolts are the same.

Romanian bolts are unique (AKM spec) and not directly compatible.

FWIW I cannot tell a difference in the extractor between the 5.45 and 5.56 bolts. The extraction behavior the same between the two of them.

This summer I am finally getting around to building my Bulgarian AK-74 kit /w 5.56 barrel. I don't expect to have any problems with the 5.45 bolt, but I'll see how it behaves with commercial brass-case ammo with softer primers.

FWIW I purchased the bolt in your top link to have as a spare for my .223 Saiga and Vepr rifles.

The main difference I note in the 2 is the Spring loaded firing pin and the hole for it is larger.

Like you I wanted the .223 bolt, but they were sold out. They do get them in, be patient and jump on them when you see them listed.

They do not know when the will be instock either, I called and ask.

  • 1 year later...

I'm having some .223 Saiga bolts made.  Currently, the engineering firm is in the prototyping stage.

It'll be a direct copy of the Saiga bolt, including the spring loaded firing pin, which I currently sell.

Wrong bolt for a Saiga.

You're totally right.  My fault....I just explained the difference between a standard and Saiga bolt in another thread and then go and post the wrong information. oops.gif
