TWS Dog Leg Rail

Recommended Posts

Just added the TWS dog leg rail to one of my Saigas. I was really interested in having a rear peep sight for my +50 eyes and I like it. Can't wait to take it to the range. I'll take a few shots with the irons and then sight-in the Primary Arms red dot on it. The fit and finish are better than I expected after reading some of the reviews online. The fit and finish on my Saiga is very good. I don't have the gaps along my cover like others have experienced with theirs. I don't know if there's been a change in the dog leg cover or if those other brands of AK's are that much different than my Saiga. If it performs as well as it looks I'll be getting another one for one of my other rifles.

Here's a photo of the left side. At the very front of the cover there's a slight gap. The original cover slides into the groove so the cover fits flush. Since this cover hinges open I don't see any way for it to be completely flush to the front. To me that little gap is negligible and it can't be what the negative reviews were talking about.

The hardest part of the installation was wrestling with the recoil spring. TWS supplies a new rear cover latch so it has to be swapped out with the original. At first I couldn't figure out how to remove the spring stop on the front end of the recoil spring assembly. I finally realized the recoil spring guide was split inside the spring stop and I had to move the sides outward to remove the stop. Everything else was pretty straight forward.

I've always been interested in these, especially for the rear peep sight.

The only controversy I have heard about these is returning to zero after flipping the rail up to clean the rifle. Some say it returns to zero, others say it does not. Maybe the way it fits on each particular rifle affects this.

Krebs has something similar at about three times the cost. The back portion of the rail secures to a latch mounted to the rifle with the buttstock screw.

I would like to see a scope mount/rear peep sight that mounts on the rifle in the traditional way using the side rail that comes with the rifle. I think this would be the ultimate peep sight. Might be that the peep sight would sit pretty high so that the front sight would have to be modified or replaced to make it work. Then there is the issue of proper cheek weld. Not sure why something like this is not available.

There is also a product from UTG on the market, priced a bit less than the TWS rail, but haven't read too many reviews of it. One was on this forum, but the user never came back to confirm how well it worked: http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?/topic/86222-utg-k47-tactical-qd-low-profile-rail-system/

I wouldn't use a lot of UTG stuff, but rails are hard to screw up, and I've been impressed with the US-made UTG Pro side mount that I bought several months back - it's very light, solid, and far better workmanship than my BP-02.

I haven't been able to find out if this product is part of UTG's US-made product line.

The UTG rail is similar to the Beryl rail - it uses an anchor at the rear of the receiver to lock the entire rail down, independent of the dust cover. The UTG rear base bolts into the stock tang. There is also a small windage-adjustable rear sight built in.

Yes these photos are from an airsoft site, but the rail is not an airsoft piece. Photos taken at SHOT show.

If you look at the UTG rail above, another idea comes to mind: I'm surprised that nobody has made an AK iron sight that bolts down into the rear stock tang.

This might be the best idea yet.

It's an AK.  Why do you need to clean the breech a bunch? It's not like it's an AR or something.
