No more steel GK-01?

Recommended Posts

Molot is only making aluminum GK-01 now?

if they are, they will be for  commercial sales only, unless they designed the  aluminum mag to be as sturdy as the current production M16 mag, I really don't see the Russian military issuing these to troops. they tried it with the aluminum AKM "waffle" mag in the 80s in Afghanistan,  and it was a resounding failure, mag was easily dented. dented mag bodies are not conducive for feed rounds.  of course to be fair, the aluminum AKM mag was really, really thin. about the same thickness as the HK33 40 rounder, which was a  resounding failure for the Germans, same problem, easily dented. we also had a resounding failure when the first  M16 mag was issued, a thin aluminum "waffle" pattern.

It's a muzzle brake.

ETA: Scroll down for some revised info on this.

As I understand it, the production Molot GK-01 brake has always been made of aluminum with a steel threaded insert. There were a few made from titanium, but they were not for the commercial market and I highly doubt any made stateside. I have some Molot parts that are unavailable in the US, but the Ti GK-01 isn't one of them. I'd be thrilled to have one, just because wink.png

I dug a little and got some interesting info on the materials used for the Molot GK-01 and how that has morphed through time. The first prototypes were made from steel and were not made by Molot. The first commercial (European market) version was Ti, limited production, and very expensive. Since we have been getting them stateside, they have always been aluminum with a steel insert.
