Parents Required to Have Written Permission

Burlington, IA City Council Stopped by Gun Owners - For Now!
267b1948fa84309bc99f9c0289cabe44_L.jpg

Sometimes “forward thinking” can be a good thing – as in when City Council members look ahead to their own re-election campaigns and make common sense decisions on behalf of their residents instead of pursuing a path of ideological craziness.

This is what happened yesterday in Burlington – as the City Council voted down their own proposal to require citizens and visitors in their city to obtain WRITTEN permission from the City Council before children could play with many types of toy guns.

In fact, it was so broad that you would be in violation of the ordinance if your child had one of these toys in the backseat of the car while you were driving around town running errands.

The penalty for being a brazen criminal who would allow your kids to use these toys as they run through the alley behind the house chasing fellow 8 year old criminals in a deadly game of Cops and Robbers – would be a fine in excess of $500 and a possible jail stint of 30 days.

On the one hand you want to just laugh at the insanity of such a proposal – if it wasn’t so serious.

As gun owners know, children all over America are being arrested, kicked out of school, and demonized for toy guns use on an almost daily basis.

Burlington’s City Council wanted to raise the stakes by being allowed to put “violators” in jail for a month, and wanted residents and visiting Iowans to simply trust that they would not abuse this power.

When we spoke with the Mayor, we laughed at this notion as gun owners are not idiots.

And so we took this to grassroots Iowans like yourself and urged them to take action.

Over 160,000 people saw our Facebook posts on this topic yesterday, and tens of thousands saw our emails where we urged you to call and email the council members.

Almost immediately the phone lines were jammed and people had a hard time getting through – a good problem to have indeed.

As a result, last night, Mayor McCampbell, voted against the proposal.

This was after angrily venting about IGO and IGO members who were there to protest this measure before the council, and protesting about what a good measure this was for Burlington.

In fact, the entire City Council joined with the mayor and killed this measure – with the exception of Council member Robert Fleming - who clearly was in denial about all the calls and emails that the council received yesterday.

Burlington now joins with George, IA and Dubuque, IA, making three towns this year where city hall wanted to pass some form of “Bogg Hogg” anti-gun madness but were stopped cold by IGO members who were mobilized by Facebook and emails.

In the past, a few “angry old guys” would protest measures like this, and would be steamrolled by a slick talking council member, city police chief (as was the case in Burlington), or city attorney.

Those days are over!

THANK YOU for all the calls and emails that you sent yesterday, they paid off!

If you hear about a similar measure being proposed in your town or county, please don’t hesitate to contact us by phone, email, or Facebook.

And if you want to support the hard, grassroots work of Iowa Gun Owners you may do so here knowing that your money goes directly to the gun rights fight in Iowa.

P.S. Close to 200,000 Iowans saw our Facebook posts and emails yesterday about the anti-gun madness being proposed by the City Council in Burlington, IA, where they wanted to make parents receive written permission from the city before children could play with many types of toy guns that Iowa children have played with for generations.

If you violated this law, you’d be facing a fine of $500 and a 30 day stint in jail!

An overwhelming number of you took action and called and emailed the council, and as a result this measure was voted down last night, despite the angry denouncements of the Mayor.

Thank you for your activism! This makes three towns in a row now (Burlington, George, and Dubuque) where organized gun owners were able to stop such dangerous proposals before they became law.

I could see a complete ban and criminalization of airsoft guns comming.

THAT I wouldn't mind so much... Neighbor's stupid kid dented up my siding with a FA airsoft.

Blame the kid not the gun. Why should everyone suffer because he was being an idiot? Feels weird defending the 2nd when referring to a toy gun. bad_smile.gif

Because its a toy designed for children, not a tool intended for use by adults that can do prison time if they use irresponsibly.

To tell the truth, I would go after the parent, but there's no blood in that turnip.

Well, I know most places require you be at least 16 to purchase them... By then I'd hope (wishful thinking nowadays) that they'd have enough sense in them to not destroy people's property, however, seeing that kids younger than that or just downright stupid people get ahold of them all the time, first thing I'd have done after suffering property damage would have been confront the parent(s). You basically said that would be pointless, though, so second thing is police. I mean there's just a process for everything, but getting rid of something just because some people use it stupidly is the same as the anti-gunner's views. There's no other way to see it, I think.

I agree with all but have to take exception to Max.  Wait until you have to deal with an overzealous childsupport prosecutor.  They will find a way to get blood from that turnip. lol  .

I was just venting. Whatever... I said "I wouldn't mind as much" and you guys are taking it waaay too seriously. FWIW, it was a 10 year olds who's idiot parent handed it over to them. I fully realize it was the parent's fault and that I could have done any number of things about it.

GUYS,

I'M WONDERING WHY THEY HAVEN'T CALLED FOR A RECALL PETITION FOR THIS SCUMBAG MAYOR, AND ALL THESE TURD-ASSED CITY COUNCILMEN.

IF THEY'RE SUCCESSFUL, AND FROM THE OVERWHELMING RESPONSE TO THIS MADNESS, I BET THEY WOULD BE, IT WOULD STRIKE FEAR INTO ALL CITY GOVERNMENTS ACROSS IOWA.

LET THEM MOTHERFUCKERS PULL THE COVERS OVER THEIR HEADS AT NIGHT, IN FEAR!

CRAM THAT SHOE ON THEIR LITTLE CLOVEN HOOVES.

Good thing you didn't live next to me as a kid.  The same mistake would have put a hole in your siding as I would have been carrying a BB gun.

I'm shocked that you would blame the tool.  When they ban airsoft guns and any toys like them, the kids will be out having chainsaw wars.  Imagine what is going to happen to your siding then...  Then they will ban the chain saws.  The unintended consequence of that is that all of the trees will grow out of control and start falling on houses.  But this will be common sense legislation that if it saves just ONE child it will be worth it.

Since the chainsaw ban of 2015, kids started playing with weed whacker's...  In 2016 4342 people, mostly children, were killed by weed whackers.  Need I say where this is going?

I lived in W. Burlington from 93 to 96.  Hunting was a huge part of the lifestyle.  I just can't imagine this BS happening here.

Sad to say but Burlington is my home town. They elected a wanna-be Obama for a leader and he was elected the same way Obama was out of people feeling racist if they didn't vote for him because he was black. Burlington keeps losing residents every year because of stupid shit like this and the miss management of the local government......i'm glad i moved less than a year ago so i don't have to deal with this kind of stupid fear mongering.

Being an asshole comes natural to me.

Yes I read what you said later.  More than once.  You blamed us for taking you too seriously.  Should we look at your posts as half truths?  Your knee jerk reaction to banning things you don't like probably stem from your true feelings.  Had those that jumped on you agreed with you I don't think you'd be walking it back.

I've had my ass jumped here several times.  Most, if not all, were warranted.  I learned from every single one of them.

This is simply a disagreement and not something to get your anus all wadded up over.
