XD45 7,124
Just do what I say. http://reason.com/blog/2014/08/19/police-officer-if-you-dont-want-to-get-s? I know this is bound to start an argument but I hope it can lead to more understanding of why many of us distrust police. benelli 54
Of the few times I've dealt with cops, I have always been respectful. I had good parents. But I do see the bowed-up, overstuffed attitude every day from LE. They parade around with the PPE and a pair of sunglasses that screams "hey, I'm a badass. I'm just itching to make your life hell and some blood would only make it sweeter. I get off on your pain.". You do not demand respect, you earn it. For the good ones out there, clean up your own house before you come to mine.

pjj342 632
Good find. Body cameras should be required and universal. We also need random drug testing. There should be public access to the camera footage across the board. Videos posted after every shift, along with the officers picture, badge number, complaint record, patrol area, and a listing of that days actions (arrests, traffic stops, exc.). 8hr shift, 8hr video, intentional blocking of the camera should result in termination, period (if you have to go to the bathroom, tough shit, its recorded too) Citizens faces would be automatically blurred out to the public, keeping personal anonymity (unless they were a wanted criminal). The only restrictions would be for active investigations, but the tape would be logged into the system, linked to a case number, and when the investigation ends or the case closes(which ever comes first), the video is released. This is an important first step toward holding our public servants accountable. In a legal setting, the word of an officer is believed 100% over, theword of a citizen. Cameras level the playing field, indisputable proof will keep them honest and protect our rights, if they are implemented properly. storm6490 2,768
He has some points. However, nobody is talking about upward mobility and the escalation of the police state. The Union is communist in nature, communism is an out of control virus that eventually kills everything and itself. The Union is turning America into a police state. Look at Homeland Security and the relation to local police. Does anybody else see a conflict of interest having public servant roles infiltrated with a communist organization? It's only going to get worse until the people figure out the real problem.
thebuns1 4,323
The problem with the statements in the article is that too many police are letting their personal opinions dictate their actions. Tie that with a huge lack of accountability and you have a recipe for disaster, and distrust of the public.

The biggest difference is the rapist may actually be punished. But if the rapist got paid leave from raping after a rape, and a rapist union to protect his job, while a free rape attorney defended his raping, we would all be fucked. Oh, wait a minute.....?

magsite20 1,664
As with dealing with anyone if you keep your ego in check and just use some basic common sense nothing happens, you have a brief event maybe (like getting a ticket) and then they just go away. I generally don’t hang out with them and they don’t hang out with me, I know and have known a few over the years. One observation is from the ones I know is when cops are at work they talk about pussy, when they’re with a woman they talk about police work.

gregomega 929
dont play stupid games and you wont win stupid prizes Not denying there are messed up cops out there, but so far all I have encountered have been straight with me. Every confrontation that I have seen from start to finish between a cop and whoever has always been because whoever wasn't complying or was resisting arrest. I have been arrested a few times myself and have never been mistreated. Then again, I complied with what they told me to do. YMMV

And those (me) get real sick of being painted with the same brush You can go find lots of screw ups by police. Over 12 million arrests per year only about 400 shootings by police. What are your odds of getting shot? do the math!!! And for every cop who killed an inocent....you will find MANY who gave their lives to protect the innocent. the truth is very few cops are bad cops lots of cops have a bad day and have a bad attitude. If YOU had to deal with the ASSHOLES they deal with...YOU would have a bad attitude as well.! I have been stopped by a pissed off bad attitude cop. magsite20 1,664
remember if you think of yourself as a nail everything coming at you looks like a hammer. cops are just people with a job that I sure as hell wouldn't want, but usually I'm glad someone is doing it. my usual time with them is every few years one of them seems to think something about my driving was done wrong, I know they're wrong but I play along and let them give me a ticket just to keep them happy.

Im not worried about getting shot, Im concerned about the abuse of power, as well blatant disregard for the law. How many times have police injured or severely injured people because they had a bad day without any consequences? Those numbers are much higher. Until police are bound by the same laws they enforce, I wont trust them. They'll have to earn that, and based on what Ive been seeing lately, it wont happen anytime soon.

Big John! 2,062
Why you guys gotta fuck with Jim? There's a shitload of cops out there as we speak doing a great job at a shitty job and you guys gotta bag on the bad one's. Oh well, I guess some rotten apple's can fuck up the whole bunch. I'm on the middle ground on this one. I have huge respect for those that do it right. Yet can't stand the idea that in some places the bad are a serious problem that doesn't seem to get addressed as it should. I heard somewhere that LA cops were using body cam's and that complaints had gone down. Hmmm... This couldn't be cuz big brother is watching. Hang in there Jim. Let these guys vent about a problem that we all know exists.
poolingmyignorance 2,191
We live in a world where everybody has a video camera at their disposal everywhere they go, and social media has allowed us to share those videos with the world in an instant. Now we're finding ourselves inundated with videos of officers engaged in use of force often in questionable circumstance. There is NO shortage of these videos, and I'm not implying that they are all legit. Often they start or are edited after the fight is on and the officer is in dominate position. Now not all of those are edited, or illegitimate videos of abuse or excessive force. So when one pops up, so does that thin blue line. You don't hear the good officers stepping up and saying "This was wrong, this guy was out of line." No. They sit back silently and let the world carry on. It's really very similar to the muslims that don't out the radicals. Sure there is a peaceful majority of muslims whom really don't care about what we do, but they also feel morally obligated not to out other muslims. So speak up peaceful majority, or accept the profile that is being painted upon you.
DLT 1,646
My dad was law enforcement for 35 years. In those years, regrettably, he saw more folks that worked with him go down for doing illegal and wrong things, than he did retire. The ratio was easily 3 to 1. Many of them simply went mad with power and abused their positions. Many others were greedy and took payments to look the other way. Dad was not liked by the great majority of his peers. He didn't get together with them after work nor attended their frequent parties. He was always a family man off duty. Anyone in the community that you ask about him will tell you that he was the best and most polite officer they ever dealt with, even when they got busted by him. They won't say that about the other folks. Long story short is that there are all types of people in all types of jobs. Police or LEO's should receive your respect when they are engaged with you, but they too should be equally respectful if they expect to keep things civil and legal, because once in court, if you as an officer did or said something stupid, it will come back to haunt you.
