sccritterkiller 473
All I have a question...so I want to shorten a few things...a s12 and a hk ump and maybe my g36k. The range I belong to is 4 miles from my house but across a state line....live in SC, range in NC. In all my research I would have to file a form and wait for approval to take across state lines. Does anyone know if there is some sort of provision for distance that would not require a form...ie no more than 10 miles from home address? I don't want to fill out a form and wait for approval just to go to the range....I would soon just leave them as they if that's the case. Thanks sc
Matthew Hopkins 1,065
there is no distance provision, you are crossing state line which is a interstate move. doesn't matter if you live 10 feet from the state line or 300 miles you need a form 5320.20 to move that weapon across state line. the only NFA item you can move across state lines without the 5330.20 is silencers. That is what all my research has led me to thanks for confirmation.....dammit I was hoping I missed something. The long barrel on my USC to UMP conversion is fugly. W.P. 0
Check the ATF regs. I think there is a provision for multiple trips within a year. File once a year and you're good all year, as I understand it.

If there is a detailed explanation of a valid need for many regular trips on a regular basis over a long period (member of a shooting club, range, etc.) of time I have heard of people getting up to 2 years on them, but I can't confirm it and have no personal experience in this exact situation. It is worth looking into though.
