sobrenegade 795
We had a bad thunderstorm two weeks ago Monday. Porch light which was a 55watt compact fluorescent, out, front carriage lights, cfs, out. Path lights which were LEDs, several out. Went to Home Depot and replacement lights figured to be $21.95 each of which I needed three and one flood light. Paid cash as usual. Once I got all replaced, another one that was working decided to give up and join it's dead brethren. Back to Home Depot and this time I got smart and bought a set of four lights and two floods for $106. Here's my VISA. Fast forward to today. Letter from Credit Union came and it seems my card was in HD's hacked account along with millions of others from that weekend. Can it happen to you? Check your account if you're not sure. They can't access my Credit Union account but can charge all they want on the VISA. Since the CU already is aware, I won't be responsible, but I couldn't close the account today because someone was closed until Monday. I know I will be chastised for using credit, but I was short on lunch money. Just a heads up all
Big John! 2,062
Not HD's fault. With this new ease of spending comes the new ease of stealing. Fuckers can sit in their mom's basement and get rich. Too bad the NSA is too busy watching porn to catch these assholes.
sobrenegade 795
I agree, partially. Granted, the hackers sure won't make this kind of money flipping burgers, but I would think a company their size had bigger security measures. In store, yes. Try this. Go to the tool section, grab a set of bolt cutters and see if you make it out the door to test them on the cable connecting all the lawn tractors. Will I use my credit card there again? Not that one. I'll be waiting to hear how it all turns out. Either way I get a new card and return to paying cash locally. Ironically, I've only used that card twice at HD and they got hacked the second time. On a positive note, I'm batting .500.
gunman1 1,753
I've used my card hundreds of times at Home Depot, and Lowes, never hacked. From my perspective I would say you had some bad luck, sorry it happened to you.
sobrenegade 795
No biggy, I've got lots of company. Everyone using a VISA card that weekend at HD is where I am. I give my Credit Union a lot of thanks. They said in the letter I got yesterday, if I didn't close the account, they would and the new cards were being issued. Hell, I was tempted to buy something.
HB of CJ 1,263
My Visa account about 10 years ago got hacked for $400. I called up the local cops where the place was that drew out the illegal funds and the fraud detective told me flat out that unless it is more than $1000 bucks, they, (police) will not investigate or make an arrest. Nothing. They knew the business. They probably knew the individual who did the $ripping$. They still did not investigate. Not worth their time the detective said to me. Visa made it good to me. Visa did not care either with specifics. Move along kind sir, nothing to see here. WTF? HB FWIW: later I was not using the card and I got a quite nasty letter from VISA saving that if I did not use the account, they could close it out for non activity. Well, there was plenty of illegal activity, let me tell you. I mailed them the cut up card back and I said non polite things. Finally, I am in the end game of FINALLY paying off a whole shit pot full of credit card debt run up by my ex lady friend. Very ex. My feeble point is that I should have listened, (again it seems) when friends said do not give that smart, pretty lady a credit card. Shit. I never learn.
Matthew Hopkins 1,065
I know I will be chastised for using credit, but I was short on lunch money. Just a heads up all there are 2 ways to use a CC; the smart way and the stupid way. SMART WAY; use it to buy and reap the rewards that come with it, cash back etc.... then pay off the statement balance at the end of the month and pay no interest STUPID WAY; just keep racking up charges on it, making the balance larger and larger every month and pay and pay along with the interest accumulating each and every month
sobrenegade 795
Balance is paid before interest starts. Haven't carried a balance in years. ABC World News just reported tonight that ALL credit and debit cards within the last five months were stolen, not just the VISAs. No PIN numbers though. Now I have more company. XD45 7,124
Just got a letter from my bank. Since their records show I used my card at Home Depot they are cancelling my debit card and issuing me a new one. No options. Here's your new card and kindly stfu. Just like they did when their records showed I had used my card at Target. Yeah I know. "Change banks." I hate all fucking banks. I changed to this one to get away from BofA with their special accounts for illegals.
thebuns1 4,323
Contact the card issuer, and let them know. They will decline all shit and issue you a new one.

Fuck BOA, I dropped them like a hot rock when they were discovered to be laundering money for wetbacks, at the same time they were slowly increasing the rate on my credit card I had with them
sobrenegade 795
What's the old saying, "misery loves company"? Took a quick nap after work this afternoon and as I rolled off the couch the roomie says, "a big ass tree limb fell on the fence". I looked out and it was about 2000 lbs of big ass limb. As luck would have it, the part that broke away landed in the crotch about 8 feet from the ground, with the less heavier parts hitting the ground and supporting the weight before the fence took the brunt of the hit. Can't get the new Stihl, yet, no credit card, so I broke out a bow saw and my trusty 4 ft. crosscut. Took enough weight off to stabilize it until this weekend, then I'll get medieval on it. Roomie asked why don't I just call someone to do it, so I said "will that be credit card or cash?" Dirty look and exit back to the house. Why can't I learn?
G O B 3,516
Your bank is sending you a new card because your old one is up for sale on some clandestine web market. I had mine changed last week, BEFORE the bank even knew there was a problem
toothandnail 275
The PROBLEM is nobody cares, not the bank/CC co. , not law enforcement. TRY getting either one of them to go after the scammers, they DON'T care. The CC co. takes the $$ back from the retailer , LEO may go after the guy if BOTH parties are local. As a business owner I've run into this a couple of times , the retailer is the only one who gets screwed on a regular basis.
sobrenegade 795
I began to ponder this situation while at work and I believe there is now going to be another problem manifesting. If even 10% of 60 million credit cards are reissued, which as in my case was automatic by the Credit Union, there will be an awful lot of new cards floating through the Postal Service. Of course some will get lost or destroyed in transit, not to mention the thieving bastards who watch mail deliveries. Time to put the tin foil hat back on. I was almost over the solar stuff, ISIL attack, immigrant children infestation of the heartland, flying trees...
XD45 7,124
As I hear them still talking about this on the radio it occurs to me to wonder. Why does Home Depot or Target or whoever have databases of the credit card numbers of their customers? I bought something there. I paid with a card. Once the card is charged and they have received their money, what business do they have saving credit card numbers?

evlblkwpnz 3,418
I have multiple accounts that bought from HD during that time period. No fraudulent charges, so far.
csspecs 1,987
I got the replacement letter a week ago, so I'm getting another card due to HD.. But my card works still, the letter said to watch for foreign transactions, but a few years ago I called and had my cards locked down to US only transactions. So I doubt I have anything to worry about.
hdskumm 39
Used my debit and credit cards there. My bank issued me a new debit within a few minutes on the phone. But my credit card company flat out refused to send me a new one. Kind of strange position to take since it's on them if I get fraudulent charges.
sobrenegade 795
I received my new card the following Friday. I checked the account just in case after having it cancelled until it came in the mail. I agree with Darth, but like the instant check on firearms purchase, why maintain the info? Makes me wonder if they are they deleting the background check info after getting the all clear to go ahead with the purchase? How would we even know? Oh yeah, right, the government said so. Guess I'll keep the card in the safe for now and use the old crosscut.
kevinfreel 215
I know a lot of stores use CC info to verify purchases for warranty or returns.
uzitiger 193
Not HD's fault. With this new ease of spending comes the new ease of stealing. Fuckers can sit in their mom's basement and get rich. Too bad the NSA is too busy watching porn to catch these assholes. The same thing happened to me at Target last year on Black Friday. Chase issued me a new card number because they were hacked. These assholes are getting more devious in stealing data and as Big John said, the NSA is too busy with porn and spying on us instead of protecting us from these assholes. montec 164
All these companies coming out are getting hit hard. Going back to black friday there was another store much larger breach then target, however they did not come forward. I have my bets set that its walmart. I dont worry about my cards. I don't use a debit card for a good reason except to get cash or in a case I don't have a CC. All the cards I have have $0 fraud libility so if they jack my card its not my issue. I've gone to designating one specific card for automatic transactions. Like recurring charges, wife's spotify, cell phone protection plan, ect. To help ease the burden when it happens. Now am I taking these companies that contact me and tell me about this and provide some sort of service as comp, hellz yeah, but I've been in the CC industry so I know the games and how to play them and use the card benefits to my benefit. As for them keeping things on file, thats all dependent on their policies. I know menards you can look up old reciepts using a card for I think 18months. But alot of them keep things on file for time due to disputes and fraud investigations. Edited September 24, 2014 by montec
james lambert 3,059
got the call today my info was stolen. cards shut off, 7 to 10 days for new cards to show up. but i didnt lose anything
sobrenegade 795
I heard on ABC news last night that they are already using the stolen info. Said it starts with small or what they call micro purchases and when that is allowed then go to the bigger ticket items and even as much as to drain the card's account. Guess some companies were willing to risk not cancelling the cards.
