Capt Nemo 882
I just noticed a spot on my OP rod that seems to be spalling off. I'll get some pics. The area is a U shaped area that looks hexagonal, and kinda looks like it might have been welded over and then ground to shape. Under the magnifying glass, it looks like small chunks are spalling off, but everything's nice and shiny with no hint of corrosion. Anyone else see this either on an S-12 or AK? Any replacements? Spartacus 1,619
Is it just the op rod coming apart, or is the threaded part of the carrier involved too? pics... At least you can get it upgraded to a HD op rod if needed. https://cadizgunworks.com/store/index.php?route=product/product&path=18_27&product_id=72 Edited September 7, 2014 by Spartacus
Capt Nemo 882
Here's the pic. Wish I could magnify it better. Grid is 10 to the inch. Edited September 8, 2014 by Capt Nemo
evlblkwpnz 3,418
Did it look rusty?
ElHuron 14
I believe that is a proof mark of some sort. Both my 2013 saiga 12's have it
Capt Nemo 882
No rust, just shiny metal. It might just be be a proof mark as I found one in the same area on my S12's #2 and #3 (2012), only the U had square corners and did look stamped. But those stamps didn't look granular as this does. Probably a worn or chipped stamp, or some sort of fracturing damage from the stamp. I'll keep an eye on it for cracking. At least parts are available! The last time I saw metal looking like this was a chunk of aluminium with a bolt embedded in the barstock. That did show corrosion around the spalled areas. Finding the bolt with a milling cutter was a lot of expensive fun! (bent the spindle and threw the chuck)
