Armory USA AK weighs 1/2lb less than converted Saiga?

Recommended Posts

I just finished converting my saiga and noticed that my old Armory USA AK (a gift from a relative) weighs exactly 0.4lbs (6.4oz) less than my converted Saiga.

The AUSA has a very wide but thin-shelled ATI foregrip, and traditional 47 angled gas tube feeder, plus a Tapco M16 muzzle break, but it's noticably lighter and more steady to hold... like the balance is still better overall.

I think the barrel on the AUSA might be lighter than the Saiga barrel... since that seems like a likely culprit for such a difference in balance.

Are the Saiga barrels heavier since they are Russian vs whatever is on the AUSA, or could it just be that the rotund ATI foegrip grips better for me?

Could be, but I wouldn't really think so... Most 7.62x39 AK barrels are right around the same profile to accept the same barrel components. If you have a set of calipers, you can easily see the barrel profiles for each.

You'd have to post each aspect of your setups to see what savings are where.
