HELP: Best Sling Swivel Stud

Recommended Posts

Okay, so I have an unconverted IZ132 from RWC with the regular plastic buttstock. The screw that attaches the stud to the buttstock goes entirely through the sling swivel stud, meaning the attached loop isn't a solid piece, but split so the screw can go through it.

This seems awfully weak to me, and eventually the loop will stretch and separate until it fails. I changed out the forend to a Tapco, so that one is taken care of; but I was wondering if anyone was familiar with this setup and knows what kind of stud is best for the the buttstock as far as screw size and threads... believe it or not the folks actually importing and selling the gun say they have no clue.

Could you put a nut and washer on the inside of the hollow but stock.

Yes, it appears I could remove the plastic end piece, in which case I could use virtually any size stud and screw; but I was hoping to just get the specs on the specific size of the hole and threads that are already there so I could just apply a little loctite and screw in a fixed stud rather than have the 3-piece setup (screw/housing/loop) currently employed.

The only thing the RWC rep could tell me about the size was, "I don't know, but I bet it's metric.". shocked.gif

That sling swivel is very hard steel.  You will probably break a sling before you break that!  I've been shooting/modding saigas since 2007, and have never seen one bend!

Well, part of the appeal of this gun to me was the inherent strength and reliability, so I don't doubt the split loop is also probably strong, but that's not the only issue.

Because the screw goes through the housing and blocks any solid piece of metal from going through, I can't use typical slings with the quick-release bar that goes through.

I'm not trying to employ a sling that allows me to let it hang in front of me, like a single-point; I'm trying to use a typical sling you'd find on a hunting rifle that allows me to carry it long distances on my shoulder or over my head and across my back.

I appreciate the replies and assistance you guys are providing. One other thing; is there a preferred site to get the best prices on SGM 30-round mags, or are we pretty much stuck paying $25-30 plus shipping for them?
