Shorten a 24" Barrel

Recommended Posts

New here to the forum and recently purchased a S12 with a 24" Barrel. I am sure I will not be using this as a hunting gun. I have plenty of those. I bought this for home defense as well as a big boy toy.

I want to shorten the barrel but am a little hesitant to do so because once I cut it there is not putting it back. I know a lot of you have the 19" barrel and I am wondering do you ever wish you had a longer one?

I am planning to cut it down soon unless there is a really good reason not too.

Thanks in advance for for feedback.

Hi Marvin, welcome fellow NC'er to the forum.

You will also need to modify the gas ports in order for it to still cycle after cutting it back like that. If you are close to southern Wake Co. and want to come by sometime I would be happy to show you exactly what needs to be done. Basically the gas block has to be removed, checked to see if it's partially obstructing any existing ports, and a 4th port added. It will also help very much to have the bolt and carrier re-profiled & polished to get rid of all the excess friction slowing down the cycle. Send me a PM if I can help.

I had 2  24" S12s. I chopped and permed one and chopped one to 18". No regrets. 24" of barrel on a Saiga 12 is nearly useless for most people's intended use. You will likely need to do some gas work and Cobra can get you straight with a great action job.

Thanks for the input!

It seems to me that I really have no use for a 24 inch but if I was missing something I was hoping someone may point that out before I cut it. Kind of hard to put it back :)

Shannon, I am about 2 hours east of you in Martin County but travel to Fuquay and the rest of Wake county on a regular basis. I get it to you to get some of this done correctly.

I'll PM you when I am headed your way.

Longer barrel is for bird hunting or skeet/clay shooting.  The extra length gives more stability when swinging the barrel to follow a moving target.  S12 is really not that type of gun, although you could use it for that.  The Russians made them with longer barrels to make them easier to import because then they could plausibly be viewed as a "hunting" shotgun.  That's why it's important to chop that extra shit off to restore it to what it's supposed to be, a 12 gauge AK47

I would be very interested in trading you out of the barrel/gun. I would like to see if I can make it worth your while. Please pm me and I will give me your contact number. If someone else has a 24" barrel, please pm me. I am building a dragonov clone and would love the the extra 5".

Pedal2Alloy:

While it sounds neat to refer to this shotty as a 12 gauge AK47, it is better to call it a 12 gauge Kalashnikov, so as not to panic the sheeple as they have been indoctrinated by the socialists (left). Also, IIRC, thanks to the '86 GOPA rider by Tom Foley, no more select fire/full-auto wpns are allowed in civilian hands that weren't already there. It's one of the reasons we were able to successfully Ex-Foley-ate Washington...
