New to the Saiga 12 & giving it some TLC

Recommended Posts

I'm new to the forum and to the Saiga 12 shotgun. After I purchased an unconverted Saiga 12 a few weeks ago, I have since learned about your forum and started reading upon everyone's experience.

My take away from the forum so far: it is a great shotgun that needs a little TLC initially. A great wealth of knowledge and helpful folks on this forum.

My experience with the shotgun so far: it is in the majority of most NIB Saigas and needs some attention.

Had 6 FTF in first 20 rounds of 2-3/4" 00 Buckshot. Don't recall the brand, but it wasn't Remington or China-mart.

I've ordered and received from C.S.S. their Reliability Kit, and their Molot style muzzle break (that break is amazingly lightweight in the hand for its apparent bulk)

I've taken it to my local gunsmith to have a little stoning done to the "ejector face" (?) (, I am not a gunsmith, so please don't flame me if I misuse the terminology... This is the very reason it is at the gunsmith's shop). The machined face is very blunt and sharp causing the first round in the magazine to stove pipe.

After those improvements, I plan to have the basic improvement to the BCG, Bolt & FCG performed by Cobra Custom. These things are pretty rough and raw from Izmash. I was impressed on how well the action slides after they work on it.

I was a little disappointed that I jumped into the purchase before learning about the idiosyncrasies of the firearm...BUT I don't believe in quitting on the dream of owning one. It was a "spur of the weekend" purchase that I will see through to completion.

I refuse to have a firearm that isn't 100% dependable. So here I am in the early stage of modification (thanks to all of the informative folks on this forum) to reach that "state" with my shotgun.

If I am missing something, or am out of synch, please chime in. I don't want to make any mis-steps.

Thanks in advance.

OP, you have the right mindset for owning a Saiga 12. A lot of people buy and become frustrated, then sell for lack of interest, time or DIY ambition. Or, they start to throw parts at it because they are claimed to cure problems but really don't and sometimes even send the gun farther down the hole.

If someone buys knowing off the bat they are a tinkerers gun, then achieving the 100% reliability goal isn't that difficult to do.

Welcome
