horatio 515 Posted January 30, 2015 Report Share Posted January 30, 2015 Sgammo has some decent prices on prvi partizan xm855 and I was thinking of picking some up, but I was curious to know if its any good. Sg says its considered some of the best and he's always been honest, but I do remember a thread awhile back about some PP 54R brass splitting which has me a little concerned. I pretty much only use federal/AE and a little Remington and Winchester so I don't know much about foreign ammo outside of the Russian stuff. So does anybody use it? Is it worth picking up? Not sure who was getting split brass but their weapon may have been dicked up? I believe the split casing thread was started by capt nemo about his mosin, but I'm not real sure, and I didn't really find anything bad about it when I did a search but I wanted to ask some people whose opinions I trust. I'm planning on leaving it at my brother in laws cabin in northern Minnesota. It's not climate controlled since we don't get there much so I wanted to see how these plastic wrapped cases do after 2 or 3 years of dramatic temperature change. Ammo cans and tins have been ok in the past. they are ideal for long term storage and already have good packing. dump them into an old ammo can and you are golden for about 50 years! The round was designed for 20" barrels and it really doesn't do well from shorter barrels. It's called a "penetrator" for a reason. That bullet penetrates too much without tumbling. Especially from shorter barrels. But it's not armor piercing. It won't penetrate armor any better than other 5.56 rounds. For practice Wolf Gold can't be beat. And if necessary, the 55gr pill will do the job on live targets. My "oh shit" 5.56 mags are loaded with the PPU 75gr. That round tumbles and fragments even from shorter barrels. I have some PPU 54R casings that I've reloaded more than half a dozen times without issues. I've used a small amount of their 5.56 in the past, but I was dumping ammo through a dealer's select-fire rifle, so I can't really speak to accuracy. Is surprisingly good for the price tag and much cleaner than the competition in its price range. If you can get it and get it cheap stock up. Fun. Zero stoppages. Zero. Cases look good to go for trimming and reloading. Chronograph speeds right at 1985 fps., average. Full power loads. Accuracy better than with L.C. USGI ball ammo. Prvi Partizan works great for us. All US Code Laws And NFA Rules Apply. HB of CJ (old coot) I read some where once that Prvi Partizan is basically Hungarian Winchester, but I am not sure. Some help here please. Very consistent within spec. case lengths also for FWIW. Edited by HB ... SG Ammo for the last batch just recently. You do NOT need the $extra$ $insurance$ or $signature$ with SG Ammo. Never had a delivery problem. We are a happy repeat customer. Hope this helps kinda. Henry. The penetrator is only 5 bucks more for a thousand over the m193 so I'm probably just going to get that. This isn't my shtf ammo this is my left in a cabin in -45 to 100 degree for two year target ammo. But I am looking into what darth said about their 75 g stuff, seems interesting. The Wolf Gold ammo is brass case M193 spec (don't pay attention to the 223 label), with sealed bullets and primers for long term storage. It's made in Taiwan and it's cleaner than the Russian stuff. It's accurate in all my 5.56 guns. And it costs less than 30 cents a round to your door. From what I understand Taiwan tooled up to make M193 for a government contract and when that contract was done they just kept making the ammo, selling it through Wolf. Why let the tooling go to waste? This stuff is tits. I don't know why anybody buys anything else for blasting ammo or stacking ammo. So it's GTG by US mil standards. many people still sneer at it because it says WOLF on the box. find out if your barrel prefers the 55gr or 62gr before buying in bulk. Was more consistant than wolf black box, which helped with accuracy. I reloaded the brass and I noticed that the primer pocket was a smidge tighter than the LC 556 brass I had. This might have been proof test ammo that accidentally got into the wrong boxes. Bullet diameters I believe were .312" and not .308" which could either stick or blow a barrel in Finnish versions. If you notice the bolt getting sticky or accuracy going haywire with PPU, you got some of this bad batch of 54R. Other than this I've heard good things about PPU, and have 3 boxes of 5.56 to shoot. Well, the diameter thing is always a problem with Finn rifles - you either know about the bore diameter difference, or you don't. A normal Mosin barrel has no problem with .312. I've only put a few rounds through my M39, and they were all handloaded with .308 to be on the safe side. I really should slug the barrel some time - I just don't have a micrometer right now. I am thinking of buying some, I reload so I was a bit concerned about the quality of brass. I have a 1 in 7 barrel and it likes the 62gn I feed it, I have yet to try 55gn.
