How is this not an invasion of privacy? So now what?, the Gob boys are going to get in on the action? I do not own a smart tv, actually it is the old tube style (Analog TV), is there a way to disable this? and would you even trust it? What do you think? ETA: Beware of Samsung's Statement, it was only AFTER a customer that bothered reading the manual realized what was going on. DLT 1,646
How can anyone be even remotely surprised about this. The 4th has practically been thrown in the shredder.
tatonic 159
Serves one right for buying the devils work. Why would you want such an obvious intrusion in your home unless you are old and "can't get up". And God help your utube rep if you cant 'get it up' while on the couch with the lady. (if you can call her that) I personally don't have such issues but can be sympathetic to you guys that rely on the pharms. HaHa. If people allow active monitoring in their homes by corps and gobermint then their stupidity will be their downfall.

storm6490 2,768
The Samsung smart TV has to be activated for voice commands. You agree when turning it on that your voice will be sent to a thrid party company to translate. In the USA, it will be sent to Google for english translation. It is a computer that stores your voice patterns and gets better as you use it. The trust issue here is that you are using a third party to translate. Not a big deal but not everybody is up to date on technology and does not expect a smartphone capability in their television nor do they understand how it operate. If you do not trust the third party translator, you simply turn off the voice commands... which are pretty stupid.... and use the remote. If you are paranoid about your security and do not use personas or skip your ip around, get rid of your cell phone, car, laptop, high speed digital cable box with microphone, etc etc.... The article is a bit misleading. Using a samsung smart television is just about as secure as using voice commands on your iphone or android phone for voice commands.

storm6490 2,768
I could probably hack into it and I'm sure the engineer that built it has a few back doors and bugs that could open it up. However, if you don't conscent to the voice commands anything you say can't be held up in a court of law. Samsung makes the best monitors so it sucks they get all the bad attention from people using cellular phones that are being actively spoofed by local cops with surplus fed. Stingray towers. Just be careful around electronics, especially your cellular phone, the greatest bug of them all.

Rhodes1968 1,638
Well we have all seen or heard some fairly outrageous things hold up in court, so just avoiding the issue entirely is far easier as long as thinking doesn't cause a headache. Some things you just do on principle. The internet of things can suck it. Point being there are ways to lock this down and prove it conclusively secure they just havent done so.

I was not surprised, I was trying to be informative for those who did or do not know... Get your constitution and civil liberties straight. This does violate the law, it is called wire tapping and is a felony in 2 party States. Remember that judges are put in place to uphold the law and any variation of it is called an act of treason... HB of CJ 1,263
I was told that it may only be a factor or concern in merry old England and even there only with certain companies providing the TV interface and even then only under other specific conditions. But ... that is only what I was told by others. I for one just dunno. Just me. HB of CJ (old coot)

It's illegal wiretap if OUR .gov does it. If our .gov gets the Brits to do it, it's OK. It happens all the time.

DogMan 2,343
TV? Is that the box thingy that I turn on at the beginning of football season and turn off after the superbowl? Well, "they" couldn't have heard much from me except curse words so I'm not too concerned, and it's not a "smart" TV anyway. That being said, the next box thingy I buy won't have this capability now that I'm aware and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Edited March 2, 2015 by DogMan

Last I checked, they arrested people for that. They can legally do it if you agree to it - which is what is in all that tiny writing, buried deep in a bunch of legalese. Just like Facebook, Reddit, Pintrist, etc. do. If you don't want their services, you can opt out of all those. The TV data collection is easy to opt out of, you just have to know to do it. Or just don't buy a smart TV.

I predict that in mid to late 2016 we no longer will be able to pay the interest on the $$$$ that we owe, hell we have not paid the principle since GW Bush. Let me ask, what happens when you do not pay your mortgage? Car payments? Those houses that you own that where worth something, no more, hell the AIG & Security Exchange scam will look like nothing compared to this. This will affect all Americans then the world and some more then others of course... Good Luck Edited March 2, 2015 by 308saiga
