Heartbreaker 1,085
Hey all, I just purchased a fine specimen of a Saiga 12. Why? Because everybody has a pump, or a semi with a tube, or an over-under or a side-by-side, but very few own a Saiga or anything that even resembles it. And since I can't afford the SRM 1216, I went with the Saiga. So now I'm planning to convert it and tac it up and have a blast! I'm actually pretty excited to be dinking around with the guts, it'll give me some thing to do in the evenings.

JESS1344 508
HEARTBREAKER, WELCOME ABOARD. RUN A HUNDRED OR SO W-MART FEDERAL BIRDSHOT THROUGH IT, PLUS SOME 00 AND SLUGS TO BREAK IT IN BEFORE TINKERING. YOU WANT IT IN "VIRGIN" CONDITION, WITH 100+ ROUNDS THROUGH IT, IT JUST MAKES IT EASIER TO DIAGNOSE ANY POSSIBLE PROBLEMS, SHOULD ANY POP UP. STOP AFTER EVERY BOX OR TWO OF SHELLS, PULL THE GAS PLUG, AND DUMP OUT THE ACCUMULATED CRAP. READ A LOT ON THIS SITE BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY MODS. THERE IS NO KNOWN CURE FOR SAIGA-12 JESS1344
Heartbreaker 1,085
Thanks guys, I think I'll like it here. I have really thick skin, about the only thing that can penetrate it is a Saiga Already ran a box of #8 Winchester target as soon as I got home, had one stovepipe but no biggie. Can't wait to dump a bunch more through to break it in, lotsa fun
JESS1344 508
HEARTBREAKER, THE BULK FEDERALS SEEM TO WORK BETTER; THE WINCHESTERS SEEM TO BE A BIT WEAKER, NOT GIVING THE ACTION THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF KICK. COULD ALSO BE THE TYPE POWDER, WITH A DIFFERENT PRESSURE CURVE, THAT ISN'T A GOOD MATCH FOR THE SAIGA GAS SYSTEM, AT LEAST UNTIL IT'S BROKEN-IN, AND A BIT LOOSER. Heartbreaker 1,085
Well I ran a whole bunch of shells through and ordered a bunch of parts, now to set up a table in a corner for a long project.

JESS1344 508
HEARTBREAKER, MAKE A BATTLE PLAN; WHAT TO CHANGE OUT, AND IN WHAT ORDER, AND CHANGE ONE THING AT A TIME. THAT'S FOR OPERATIONAL PARTS, STUFF SUCH AS PISTOL GRIPS AND BUTTSTOCKS RARELY CAUSE PROBLEMS. THAT WAY, IF PROBLEMS ARISE, IT'S EASIER TO PINPOINT WHAT DID IT, THAN IF YOU CHANGE A HALF-DOZEN THINGS AT ONCE. YOUR COMMENT OF "LONG PROJECT" AND DAD'S OF "TAKE YOUR TIME", SHOULD BE IN A FRAME OVER YOUR WORKBENCH. JESS1344
HB of CJ 1,263
Excellent answers already given and thank you. Yep ... try the Federal cheapo type bird shot ammo at WW. (Wally World or equal big box stores) The very cheap bird shot will have marked on the box probably 2.5 drams equalivant with 7/8 oz #7.5 shot. Low brass plastic shells. The Federals MAY cost the same and will have marked instead ... 3 drams equalivant and either 7/8 oz or 1 oz #7.5 bird shot. Still low bras base on the plastic shell. A little bit more powder. Better function. It might also give the velocity which should also be a little bit faster perhaps. My S12 when new did not like the cheap Winchesters. It did like the slightly more powerful Federals. The price, if memory serves, was the same. Yep ... shoot in your Saiga 12 a couple of hundred rounds. When you do the take down, looks for the bright spots. Wear patterns. Hope this helps. Be aware that there is no known cure for Saiga Madness. Welcome aboard. HB of CJ (old coot) Yep ... everything you will need is right here. We have great advertisers. Bring ALL the money ... you will find you need it. Very very fun indeed. Enjoy. Edited March 5, 2015 by HB of CJ

semper299 284
Welcome! I have yet to see a problem on here that someone can't help with. Like mentioned before, take your time and ask questions. More than likely someone has had the same exact problem. Edited March 6, 2015 by Semper299
Heartbreaker 1,085
Most of my parts just came in the mail. Saiga has been disassembled down to the bare receiver. Now to put together the Tapco trigger. Edited March 7, 2015 by Heartbreaker
Heartbreaker 1,085
Well that didn't go too bad. Took me a few hours but overall it went smoothly. Except for some of the springs. Now I just gotta wait for the pistol grip and stock so I can finish the project and test it.
