Spring has sprung and the fishing is heating up!
Trips to my favorite pier, Gulf State Park Pier, in Gulf Shores, AL this Sat and last Sat.

Last Sat we got skunked, we were fishing for Sheepshead and Reds... But Kings & a few Lings were what was biting.
Alas we hadn't any frozen Cig Minnows & no live bait was to be had.
The Kings & Lings were the first of the year, a major breaking of the ice.
And to have both species caught on the same day, not to mention multiple catches of each, bodes well for the season.

Yesterday, was a little on the slow side, but perseverance paid off.
Sheepies were slow but steady, and we put eight in our cooler.
Spanish fired up for awhile, they were hitting hard on size #16 Sabikis and Mackerel trees.
All sorts of Gotchas/spoons were yielding too, but not as hot.
We put 27 in our cooler, then gave eight away to a buddy who wasn't as lucky.

No Kings or Lings this time, Mother Nature flipped it around, those fishing for them got skunked.

Those were some impressive catfish.

Those are not catfish, those are Lings.

Down here they go by various names, Lings, Cobes, Cobia, Man in the Brown Suit, Mr. Brown, Brown Bastard and many expletives.

Broiled Spaniards
There's Cajun...  And then there's Coonass Cajun.

I broiled three trays of fillets for the family
Some were just plain olive oil-n-salt for one picky eater, then there was regular Cajun spiced and finally the Coonass Cajun which I fired up with some serious hellfire.
Man oh man, talk about some seriously good eating, add the sides in and it was a feast.

We are about 90 miles to the east of you this morning at Inlet Beach Fl. Water temp is 68-69 and the cobia have been running. I'll be going out in the 'yak' past the second sand bars every morning for the rest of the week. Hoping to have a couple of good outings myself.

Well, my request for taking a few vacation days was just rejected.

I was ready to load up my yak/gear and come join you.... Dang'it.

That would have been awesome. Thank you for even considering that! I love my girls, but 3 days of estrogen is taking its toll on me. Did not get out this morning. To quote George Costanza, "the sea was angry that day my friend" Swells are suppose to go down this afternoon and the rest of the week. I see at least 12 fishing charters come troll the beach daily on the outside of the 2nd sandbar directly in front of our condo, so the spot must be pretty good.

Any suggestions on what to fish with? If I was trout fishing with a fly rod I would be in my natural element. Typically I use frozen cigar minnows with an attractor, trolling about 30-40yrds behind the boat. I also throw a mid diving plug. Catch a lot of Ladyfish which are fun, but useless at dinner time.

Congrats on a great opener. You are fortunate to have such wonderful fish in your area. I really get sick of trout!

What's this heresy you speak of? Tired of trout?! In Montana?! I'd give a testicle to have access to the that water year round. Love fishing the North Branch of the Blackfoot for rainbows and cutthroat. One of the most magical days of fishing I have ever experienced was on that river a few summers ago with 4 generations of Wood's on the stream, and action galore. Felt like we were the first humans to ever set foot on that ground.

Lake Erie still half frozen, preparing for walleye season.

Oregon Inlet is temporarily closed, read it on the hull truth, last few days filming of wicked tuna north vs south had to be cancelled, myself and 5 others fishing there june 12/13.
