james peek 14
do gas blocks from mil surp parts get enough wear to consider not using them for a conversion?
forsaken352 235
I don't believe so. Many people re-use them, a parts kit, for example. It's an AK. They don't die, remember?
james peek 14
you would think, but there is no telling how many rounds through a used part and i am about to have one used on a build. kind of second guessing the gas block...plus its probably not chromed lined either.... mancat 2,368
If it's not seriously corroded internally it doesn't matter. Even if there was some corrosion it wouldn't really matter, as the AK gas system does not require a perfect seal between the piston and the gas block chamber to operate. Do you know the origin of the parts? As far as I know ALL AK-74 gas blocks are chrome-lined. Since AK-74 barrel components are the closest fit for a Saiga conversion that is probably what you're getting. If the parts are E. German or Bulgarian for example it's unlikely that they've seen much use at all.
james peek 14
cool, its Bulgarian, will be getting parts in mon so i will know for sure then. just dont want to put some sub standard part on my rifle.
mancat 2,368
nope, all Bulgarian AK-74 parts are pretty high quality, sometimes better than Russian parts themselves. only higher quality '74 parts were E. German. Edited April 20, 2015 by mancat

mancat 2,368
since you are doing a complete conversion... here are all Bulgarian barrel components on my S223, repainted a few days ago with Duplicolor DE1634. once painted they pretty much look like factory match.
