So I think I'm finally gonna get one. I feel I'm missing out. I want one I can not give 2 f$@:s about and just shoot all the cheap ammo I can put of!

So I want to get something that is reliable and easy on the wallet. I would also like wood furniture. I am most deffinatly a total moron when it comes to these guns. Only ak type gun I have is an s12.

Well, if you want cheap, reliable, and already built, then a Romanian Wasr-10/63 is probably going to be your best bet. If you want to step it up a little, perhaps an AMD-65 or Yugo M70AB1 (fixed stock) or AB2 (underfolder). However, the Yugo's have some differences. Some of your regular AK accessories may not be interchangeable. Moving up from there, you'd probably be in Polish, Bulgarian (arsenal), and Russian (Izhmash) territory, just to name a few...

+1 on the WASR-10, they are getting a lot more respect than they used to.

Haven't seen a new one in person yet, going by feedback they seem to be much higher quality than the WASRs of years ago.

I've seen a new Yugo O-PAP that's really nice too.

If you want to spend a bit more for a milled, the C39V2 is nice, although it doesn't have a scope rail.

WASR is on sale at Atlantic

I'm a huge fan of the N-PAP.  Can't beat the quality for the price.

With more information I no longer recommend the N-PAP.

Based on your description, I would definitely recommend the WASR.

They have gotten a lot nicer over the last couple of years, and it's the only "entry-level" AK with a CHF chrome lined barrel.

The NPAPs are a close second, with the chrome hammer forged barrel, but they are unfortunately not chrome lined.

They are still great rifles though, and the argument could be made that you don't need the chrome lining.

I would still stay far away from US builds with US barrels...at least while imports are still available.

The best case scenario would be to find one locally that you can inspect yourself, or buy from Atlantic Firearms where they will inspect it before shipping and take care of you if they miss something.

While I agree that the wasr 10 is a good deal, the c39v2 is really a well made rifle. Yeah, no chrome in the barrel, but when you see the abuse that rifle survived in the trials that some of the YouTube posters put it through its hard not to be impressed. Just saying.

there are actually few BAD AKs on the market right now. I just suggest avoiding anything made by IO INC until they have further proven their "new workforce."

personally I would suggest either a WASR or NPAP. neither costs very much, both are decent quality (PAP a bit nicer), and should get you going right out of the box.

Thats a load of crap. I suggest you go out and buy a new I.O. before you make such statements.

I did, and I can say my I.O. is just as good as any AK twice it's price. I've got around 700 rounds through mine with no problems at all.

The quality is top notch, very well built, wood is beautifull. They may have had issues in the past ….But this new I.O.'s AK's are great!!!!

This is coming from someone who actually owns one.

Centurys rep on their 100% US made guns is not that good from what I've been reading over on the AKfiles. The consensus is to steer clear of them.

IO has the same reputation, even with their newest builds.

Before someone jumps down my throat, I'm not saying everyone says they are Shit but a lot of people are getting fucked up AK's from both IO and Century.

The only problem, if you want to call it one, that I had is a little hammer snag. It never got hung up when shooting so I don't see it as a problem.

after close to 700 rnds it is all  gone now anyways.

To be honest I wasn't expecting much from I.O., I wanted a gun that was a beater that I didn't have to worry about if it got stole or confiscated or dropped in a lake.

What I got was a super nice reliable AK instead.

Your never gonna please everybody…….but I'm a very pleased customer. I would buy from them again.

They are overcoming a very strong bias, IMO. The rear sights are pretty much going to rattle loose if you don't loctite them. (I would change out the rear site for a peep anyway) Everything else on them is solid, straight and exceptionally smooth. I don't always care for the furniture that's packaged with them, but the build quality on all the ones from the last year or so that I have looked at is very good. Far smoother than the PAPs or anything sheet metal that I have handled. They had some odd casting designs in the BCG. -- if there are problems with that, it might change my generally favorable opinion.

Like I said before in your thread, I'm glad you got a good one, but IO has been putting out bottom of the barrel junk for so long that it will take them quite a while to establish a good QC reputation with their new rifles. Haven't seen it happen yet, but I hope it does, as more options are always better. Edited by mancat

I'm sure that's part of it. I'm sure some of it is actual issues too. I wouldn't buy either (IO or Century) without looking at it in person. But then I wouldn't buy either anyway as they don't fit my wants.

Anywho....

Well, commented about a recent IO purchase on another thread. Asked a question and made a observation to their customer service after hours, received a reply by 10 am. Plus the observation comment about a slight can't, got an offer to replace weapon on their dime for shipping and any transfer fees, wasn't even requested, so I'm pleased. Fired 1,000rds, little stiff, and a bit of trigger back slap 1st 60rds, then worked in and smooth. Couple older WASR's that have thousands of rounds, never any issues, yet have seen some that were crappy put together. Had an Arsenal with many issues, that eventually just got money back. Have always been pleased with Yugo and Polish. If purchasing 1st, would really want to buy only after seeing and checking out, unless a very reputable builder/wholesaler with an excellent return policy. Oh, purchased another Arsenal, NO issue. Every builder/seller can have a lemon, it's how they deal with it,

I would get a WASR if I were trying to get into the AK game, although this is the worst time ever to try and get an AK. They are more expensive than AR's, which is totally ass backward.

Like Darth got an under folder, really like it, yet butt is wider. Every since shoulder rebuilt by Navy Doc 30 years ago, have issue getting under folders seated. Slated to be handed down to a niece when she graduates in a couple weeks. One she grabs first when at range. Well built, was good out of the box.

Hey Darth,

Have you been following the whole NPAP / Rob Ski controversy lately?  There are a lot of people worried about the heat treat on these rifles now.

Apparently his review pissed off Century who demanded he send back all of their T&E guns immediately.  Hopefully it's overblown or if not, maybe it just affects a particular batch of receivers.

It may be cool to see AKs surviving ridiculous abuse but the fact that you can destroy anything if you try hard enough doesn't affect my opinion of the NPAP.

EDIT:  The information from Henderson Defense does affect my opinion of the NPAP.  Hard use is legit and if N-PAPs crack under hard use then I can't recommend them.
