XD45 7,124
Memorial Day was originally Decoration Day because it was a day to decorate the graves of the fallen. It is a day set aside to remember those who have given all they had to give. Veteran's Day is the day to thank our veterans. That comes in November. Thank me then. So as we enter this Memorial Day weekend... Remember that Freedom isn't Free, and all that we have we owe to those who never came home. And try to be worth of their sacrifice.

patriot 7,197
I was listening to some idiot on the radio (Mickey the kid) 94.3FM today who was droning on and on about how much he appreciates our soldiers and supports our military, and how we should remember to thank them this weekend and every day. MORON. https://www.facebook.com/RockRadioPersonality Hey, DUMBASS!!! Get it RIGHT. Sure, thank us, but Memorial Day is for remembering DEAD heroes, not LIVE ones! Definitely a public school educational success story right there. Edited May 22, 2015 by patriot
David Mark 2,452
It is indeed a solemn day. I rarely celebrate in the now contemporary way. I prefer to spend that day fishing or gardening or something where I can quietly reflect on the true meaning of the day. Thanks for that post Darth.

JohnnyE 81
Thanks Darth, for reminding us of the distinction. I know two who are interred at Arlington, and I am going to visit them on Monday. I'll take photos and send them to family members who live far away. Both were wounded in action. While one came home, had a family and lived a full, wonderful life, the other was KIA. Memorial Day is for him. Edited May 22, 2015 by JohnnyE
Dogster 577
For those that display our flag, please do it properly. It should be displayed at half-staff until noon, then full staff until sunset, unless you properly illuminate it and fly it full time. For those that do, that would be half staff midnite- noon, full staff noon- midnite. macbeau 902
I always watch Saving Private Ryan on Memorial weekend. I'll be whippin' out the Band of Brothers series. Veterans day honors those who went to war and came home. Memorial day honors those who went to war and didn't. Macbeau...
Ruffian72 548
Well, bit of a storm last night, just got back from checking, squaring away veterans graves at town and 3 rural place's of rest. Even the 9 Confederate cavalry troopers killed in a raid. Tomorrow, take from city's memorial hall, and at sunrise we start to hoist our 73 fags of honor. 64 US, 9 Confederate. Then memorial services at 10:00. Then before sunset, because so many, can't do at sunset, and there is so few of us VFW members and helpers, we will lower, fold, encase, and salute all, as last is lowered, (last fallen, last lowered) then return. Been going on since 1919. All veterans get a grave flag, those whose death was related to combat have the full size honor flag. Most are donated by the families of the fallen. My son's and 4 other family members are amongst the 73. So, yes it's personal. I can be a bastard to get along with at times, this weekend.
