lumberman 116
Got the dog the day before he was going to the happy place we all go to. He's half German shepherd and half terrier; good with the kids but too much terrier in the grey matter for my preference. Teeth are big and he's a good guard dog -- 90 pounds of don't be on the wrong side of him. Found the cat out back one day as a very young kitten of perhaps six weeks. She was beat up bad and I was hoping the humane society would take it. They referred me to the county for destruction. It was dying and I told the kids to be prepared to bury it. Kids started sprinkling holy water on it and saying prayers. Wife felt bad. Wife spent almost $1000 to bring it back to life. It's probably going to outlive me. Neither of us were cat people but the little shit watches out for the kids and house. Can't say I can understand how a little deaf cat can somehow hear but it does. This deaf cat watches for things dog hasn't heard yet. I suppose I was looking for a moral to this story but I have none. Edited July 30, 2015 by lumberman

JDeko 792
My dad just got a German Short-hair Pointer who with her floppy ears, nub-tail, and propensity for hopping for no reason well as wiggling constantly she looks a lot like a Nubian Goat. Goat-Dog amuses me greatly, I always enjoy seeing her and watching her do standing 360s for no describable reason. I also really miss my Beagle-Dachshund mutt I had from age 7 until I was 23. She was the best friend I ever had and I doubt I'll ever come across another dog like her.

He scares the shit out of everyone when he knocks on the door to come in -- he slams himself into the door.
sjgusmc21 850
Lumberman, that was the best damn story I have read all week! Thank you. Been a tough week for me and my family, and you story kind of brightened it up. I personally despise cats, but wouldn't hurt one.
chevyman097 2,579
Most of the times I have found that rescues are the and most loyal pets. Growing up we owned all kinds of pure breads and most fell ill with disease and cost thousands of dollars. Some just ended up being dumb and useless. Every single animal i have taken in on good will and pity for the poor animal trying to give it a better life has been a better friend and more loyal than most humans. Spacehog 2,218
I was a dog guy all my life growing up. Rescued a black kitten we named "Magic" and that cat changed my opinion on them. Affectionate, wait for you at the door, and fetch hair rubber bands you would shoot down the hall and lay them at your feet waiting to do it again. He was a dog trapped in a cat's body. Buried him in the back yard after 18 years. First pet I have ever had to have a grave and a marker. I have two more that combined aren't half the cat he was, but I am hopeful we will find another like him. Strays somehow know you are taking them when everyone else has rejected them.
JDeko 792
Whats funny is that my dad also has a Swiss Mountain Dog who is pretty sturdily built but just the sweetest and most kind thing ever. She sees all the praise and happiness hopping and wiggling gets so she will do her best to do little bunny-hops with the most hopeful expression ever on her face after. Dad2142Dad 6,559
Barn dogs (Cats) or strays are the best ones and are very thankful. I will have to say though I have a limit on cost $500 to fix. If it goes beyond that I will put the animal down. Have had one cat, 14 years old who met the limit twice in his lifetime. If he has another issue I'll probably let him go do to advanced age. Will be looking for a new pup when we move, gonna try and find a Sheppard at the pound. Our current pound dog is a terrier grey hound mix (Not my pick). He barks, but if it's real bad he'll just pee and I know I need to grab tools to respond. Would prefer a dog with a little more backbone............
magsite20 1,664
yep if you even like your pets it can be an expensive buddy to keep and once they're part of the family money is no object for their care. we live way out in the sticks so we've got dogs by choice and snakes plus some other stuff supplied by nature, I've spent thousands on dog meets snake stuff and dog meets heartworms and dog meets whatever else dogs meet. we've had cats but all of them died and/or disappeared around the same time years ago seems like the cats were cheaper to keep but the wife gets so upset when they go its rough. had and have a rooster they're a cheap to keep pet but very short lived usually. as I get older I'm thinking just a gold fish might be a good pet, but the wife would never let me get away with it. best of luck with the pup and cat and their up keep. G O B 3,516
The cutie in my avatar pix is LuLu the picture was taken right after she adopted me, and was still 45# of skin and bone. She is now a happy 75# of love, muscle and drool! Sweetest dog ever, she loves to please, never destroys anything but bubble wrap - give her a piece of that and she will shred it NOW! The wife is disabled, and LuLu will NOT let any man within 20" of her if I am not there. She has 0% attack but 1,000% DEFEND! Grand kids cannot fight around her she will get between them and break it up, she won't even allow rough housing - unless she is in on it! Dogs are onltyhere for a decade or two, because we change over the years and God sends you the dog that you need for where in life you are now. Our last dog was the wife's, and we brought her grave marker with us to Texas with us.
