Munanee 4 Posted August 25, 2015 Report Share Posted August 25, 2015 I just received my fire control and bolt carrier group back form Cobra and I am having a problem with the carrier group closing all the way (the bolt carrier group comes up four inches or so short of fully closed). After installing the hammer and trigger I tried to install the bolt carrier group and it just wouldn't go into battery. At first I thought Cobra had mistakenly assembled the bolt incorrectly, but after talking with Shannon and checking the photos he sent, I am confident everything was done correctly. But, the carrier/bolt assembly will not close. Something is preventing it from closing and I can't figure out what it is. I can take the bolt alone and can hand fit it into the breech just as it would be if in battery. I eventually removed both the trigger and hammer assemblies as well as the bolt and attempted to get the carrier alone to close. It came within an inch or so (as measured by the gas piston coming within an inch or so of contact with the puck). Has anyone run across a similar problem? Everything worked fine prior to sending the "guts" to be polished. I thought, perhaps, the carrier might have been accidently switched, but I had installed a charge handle extension (at 76, I need a little help charging this beast) and when the parts were received, the handle extension was still in place, so, again the blame is not with Cobra. The gun had not been out of my safe until the parts arrived back from Cobra. I have fiddled with it for at least 5 or 6 hours and I am scratching my head. If I had any hair it would have been pulled out by now. If anyone has had this or a similar problem, or if anyone has some idea of what is causing it, I would sorely appreciate the help. 1 Quote Link to post Share on other sites
gunfun 3,931 Posted August 25, 2015 Report Share Posted August 25, 2015 You have the carrier misaligned with the rails in the back. You need to make sure the bolt camming lug is correctly into the carrier, and held in the correct rotational orientation when you install the carrier and bolt into the receiver. when you do this the bolt lugs and the carrier grooves will be lined up properly with the rails and will slide home with minimal effort. If you are still having issues by tonight, quote this and I will make you a quick video of how to do it by feel. (on a saiga, but the method and feel is the same.) Looking at it as though the hammer is the real issue, this bit is probably just the extractor tension getting in his way when he's riding it forward without the recoil spring. Two more pounds of forward pressure and it probably would have clicked for him. (pun intended) Quote Link to post Share on other sites

Munanee 4 Posted August 28, 2015 Author Report Share Posted August 28, 2015 Thanks to all. I tried just about everything and finally found the problem. When I removed the trigger, hammer and bolt carrier group to be shipped to Cobra, I must have turned a small spring loaded chunk of metal (a little larger than a #4 buckshot) to the fore and aft position so that the bolt would hit it. At first I thought this piece was part of the receiver floor casting, but when I grasped it with a pair of needle-nosed pliers I found it to be held down by a spring (how you could ever remove it is beyond me). I also noticed it had a groove in one side. I soon found out that the Bolt Hold Open lever fit into that groove. So, by lifting up on this little piece of metal and turning it toward the right so the Bolt Hold Open lever fit into the groove -- Problem solved!!. Everything went together and worked as smooth as silk. And it only took me 4 hours. My dad always told me, "you have got to be a little smarter than the equipment you are working on." Cobra 76 two 2,677 Posted September 1, 2015 Report Share Posted September 1, 2015 I'm sorry I didn't think of the BHO when we were talking on the phone, that seems obvious now. I was just sure it was an alignment problem being caused by improper reassembly. Also sorry the OP had to get frustrated with fighting with it for two days and start a thread before I knew he was having a problem and called him. I am usually very quick to respond to questions. I was out of town on the first small vacation I've taken time to go on in 5 yrs. Glad it all worked out though and the weapon is back together working much better than before. YOT here are a couple of pics the OP sent me to be sure he was installing the bolt correctly in the carrier. I'd post better ones of the work done but I didn't take any.
