Newbie Just got my Saiga 20 Guage :)

Recommended Posts

Hi all, was just given a used Saiga 20 gauge as a gift and I'm basically trying to learn as much about it as I can.

I've attached images.

What I know-

Saiga 20 Gauge

2001

9 3/4 inch barrel

Laser attachment

Flashlight Attachment

I found some magazines for it on CSS. Looks like a drum mag will never happen :(

I've read a lot in this forum that these guns seem to need modding to function reliably and I'm wondering if this gun has already been modded for reliability since it's from 01 or am I likely going to still have to spend some money to get it to work properly and if so what exactly must I do?

I know I haven't shot it yet and probably won't for another week but any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Just found 13 round Mags. Anyone know if these are any good? http://www.mississippiautoarms.com/saiga-20-gauge-13-round-magazine-2-34-shells-p-1409.html?zenid=5daf4ebf962fedf7fbdd552c23d2e158

Barrel length is measured internal to the barrel with a closed bolt. Should be around 20".

It has been modified, but you need to check and see if it has the correct number of U.S. Made parts. The trigger, trigger guard, stock, gas puck, fore end are usual suspects for change out. Some are obviously changed already.

I'd check function as is first.. Looks like you have a 3" magazine installed. It will low feed 2 3/4" shells unless it has a wedge added to the follower.

If you have the 2 3/4 inch mag (marked 20x70 if i recall) do your function testing with that mag. Your gun has a gas adjustment knob, make sure you use the correct setting.

The 13 round clear poly magazines normally feed well. They are out of production as far as I know. There was a drum made for these in limited numbers.

I make a 10 round steel mag for 2 3/4"

PS 922r only applies to the person assembling the gun from the collection of part. This person was given it like this, so 922r does not apply at present.

Yerp, tis why I'm not even buying a 5+ mag until I've got my gas puck and possibly swapped out the hammer if i can do that without doing a full conversion so with an American mag its sitting at 9 non-US parts just in case.

Nice score I bought mine the same way and then converted it. I did a lot to get it to run right and I never could make it 100%. That is until I decided to trim the extractor spring.

You see I did everything to this gun. I use it for three gun so it was embarrassing to have it malfunction during a shoot. The main issue I had was it would not always eject a shell right away. Then the issue was when the action would close it wouldn't lock up resulting in the trigger being able to be pulled but the hammer not striking the firing pin. Once I swapped out that spring it closed like butter and I haven't had an issue since.

First thing I did was convert it over.

It still felt undergassed so I knocked the gas block off and drilled the holes bigger.

Still wasn't right so I polished the bolt carrier

Added CSS puck to help it cycle.

Added the ak47 gas adjuster and got it close. It would eject the shell just not always lock back up.

Drilled out the holes one size larger a 2nd time.

Discouraged that it didn't work i was about to sell it. Then I trimmed half a coil off the extractor spring and BINGO everything worked.

If I had to do it all over again I would have trimmed that spring 1st. It is a regular ak extractor spring so I would suggest you buy another one. Pretty simple to do take the bolt apart pop out the spring trim it and put it back together.

I use the CSS metal 10 rd mags. Nice thing about them is that they count as 3US parts. They did need just a little filing to get them to fit 100% but they work great.
