Folders? "tang" ???wtf??

Recommended Posts

SO I'm wanting to put on a folder with a mil-spec tube, but I have zero idea of what fits what. Do I have a "tang"? DO I not have a tang? What's a tang? lol.

I'm partial to ACE folders since I have some experience with them on my Daewoo, built like a rock but like I said this time I want a tube because I really want to keep the collapsible CSS buttpiece.

SO how do I know if I have a tang and who makes good strong folders?

Take the sporter stock off. If your gun is in original configuration there will be a tab sticking out past the end of the receiver that the rear screw holding the stock goes in.

Most of the aftermarket stocks require it to be cut off flush with the receiver, then the adapter plate is fastened on. An Ace folder would require a modular mount which can be found in several stores in the vendor section. You can then add an Ace folder with either a modular mount or a buffer tube mount depending on your choice of buttstock.

The tang is the part that sticks out and holds the stock on that a screw will go through.

This is for not cutting the tang but it sticks out

This is for cutting off the tang and givesa flush fit

Carolina shooters supply has nice folders too

If you are using a trigger guard with built-in grip nut such as Tromix or CSS, DO NOT get that block. It is partially held on by the normal style grip nut. Use the CSS one I showed instead. It fasteners in the old FCG pin holes (which also means you don't have to plug them).

Mine uses a short screw deep up inside the grip, it looks to screw into a long extension off the back of the trigger guard.

I like that CSS adapter, just watched the install vid and it's pretty slick.

It doesn't look like the "keep the tang" versions are worth doing, just because once you have that adapter then add the fold mech the whole unit is getting pretty long and you're not saving that much length.

This is a very cool stock adapter:

Look at how the tang protrudes into the tube, eliminating the need to cut it off, enabling very solid attachment, and also to not add length

Also, notice how the tube is attached above the level of the receiver.  This helps get the stock closer to the bore axis, less muzzle climb

Unfortunately it also makes iron sight usage very poor because it's much higher than the standard stock.

Yeah, my stock I still have on my Saiga makes it pretty hard to use the iron sights due to the cheek rest.

Just my two cents:

My first configuration of my S12 was an ACE folding mech and Socom stock. The thickness of the stock itself almost made the gun feel more bulky than not when folded, and just that much higher of a cheek weld made me have to mash my cheek bone into the stock to see the sights. I had a rear peep and a Dinzag FSB. I removed all the extra stuff and replaced the trunnion with the SGM stock adaptor, threaded the Socom stock directly into the gun and have never looked back. The OAL is a bit shorter, the gun feels more solid, and the cheek weld is perfect.

Not preaching against folders, but if you plan on keeping original sights, I'd recommend something different.

I won't be changing much.

Mine came with the AR type buffer tube mount and I'll be keeping the CSS buttpiece. The ACE parts allow some up or down adjustment. I'll basically just be adding a hinge to the mix.

  • 2 weeks later...

And now, with very much thanks to Heartbreaker for acquiring the CSS adapter for me, I present this months FINAL configuration lol

The folder is naturally from ACE and it's now a svelte 29" long when folded:

As to the sight line problems mentioned above this config passes "the 1911 check", when I look at a target, close my eyes and raise the gun, I am right on target with no practice. I can't ask for more.

I should have took some close pics of the CSS receiver block adapter, I left the very slightest of bump remaining from the tang so that the side screws would be under slight fore-aft tension, it fits perfect and the seams are almost perfectly straight on all sides. CSS's supplier did a NICE job getting it right!
