nlacy 692
1) Let me say I agree that Obama is a dickhead, and just using the situation for publicity. 2) That said, imagine your kid shows up to school with a homemade clock and gets arrested and taken to jail in handcuffs. I'd be f*#*ing pissed. We are so afraid of our own shadow in this country. "Out of an abundance of caution, we had to take action," spokeswoman Lesley Weaver said. [he] was handcuffed and taken to a detention center where he was fingerprinted and had mug shots taken. He was freed when his parents came for him. Police said the device, which had a digital display and circuit board, was in a case and could be mistaken for a bomb." It's this bullshit kneejerk overreaction where we're all too sensitive that is really frustrating. It's a f***ing clock. In an overly PC world where we think everyone is out to kill us, where kids get expelled for having pocket knives or making finger guns, people need to chill the f out. I feel like this country needs to get some balls. I'm starting to see the appeal of Donald Trump.

patriot 7,197
A trip to the White House for making a clock that looks like a bomb? Is DingleBarry starting a new club? Future Terrorists of North America? ...as far as skill goes, those are commercial off the shelf subassemblies, only needing connected and a battery. Remember the old Heathkits? They took more skill than that. Edited September 17, 2015 by patriot

gunfun 3,931
A trip to the White House for making a clock that looks like a bomb? Not even close. That's retarded. You would have to be a school official or an airport employee to think that looked anything like a bomb. Google the image. It looks like a normal arduino type DIY kit. Every bomb has a container to hold compression, and does not need a mess of wires. That's just silly. If you looked at the picture before posting that sentence, you were wrong and should feel bad. If you didn't you were wrong to state that before looking and you should feel bad. This is happening to kids and adults of every race far more often than any actual attacks would warrant. It isn't a profiling issue it's an issue of giving fearful ignorant people the power to hit the shut down switch on everything. They do so constantly any time they don't understand something. I've been on the point of arrest in an airport because the screener didn't know what a turbo looked like once. I had two large diesel turbos in a carry-on, since they would be stolen if checked in and cost several thousand each. The screener was visibly terrified, and reaching for her sidearm, with the other hand over a panic button. I was able to diffuse the situation by calmly asking a male screener to look at them and tell her what it was. I got lucky and he instantly recognized them as turbos and diffused the explosive situation. I do not believe in a police state where the most ignorant and fearful person is put in charge of everyone's safety, and has the power to lock down everyone and every thing any time they don't recognize an object. Face it, if you want to make a bomb, it can be made to look like anything. The only thing it wouldn't look like is a hollywood bomb. As another example, the tiny town I used to live at, Dillingham AK, got some "disaster relief money" (as compensation ostensibly to fishermen for not enforcing our fishing treaties...) Anyway, the city got that money which was supposedly for helping fishermen. It decided that what it really needed was a swat team and bomb disposal unit. I think they might have had a dozen cops the year before... So they basically made a deal with Anchorage to hire more of those in Anchorage and time share the teams/ gear. Once you have a hammer, you have to justify it's usage and find a nail... So when the sister town Naknek got some kind of cardiac monitoring machine for a pile of money IIRC $275K or $250, they shipped it through dillingham. This machine had a battery back up and beeps continuously while unplugged. The hospital had a special escort fly with the machine, and had informed/ paid each waypoint of what it was and why it beeped. None the less, when a ticket seller at DLG heard the beep, she was worried. The package said what it was, why it beeped and who to call for questions. The city summoned the bomb squad. The hospital immediately told them what it was and why. A local radio station owner/crank/city council member showed up and started recording live. Within about 5 minutes EVERYONE knew exactly what it was. However, the city had paid for round trip tickets for the new bomb squad and they were airborne within minutes. The airport was shut down for about 3 hours, the bomb squad was on scene within about an hour of the initial concern of the dip behind the counter. Then they talked about the situation live on radio for about 2 hours before deciding to use explosives to blow the machine up on the runway "just in case" They did so. I was listening to the whole thing, and flipping back to the public radio channel. The city managers could be heard live on the private radio station discussing exactly what they knew, and on the public broadcasting channel pretending not to know what was up. It was a travesty and you have never heard of it. It was all there for everyone to hear. Ignorant people being led by indifferent people wasting everyone else's time, destroying private property, and lighting fire to taxpayer money. So whenever I hear people say we should take every precaution, I disagree strongly. We should not take every precaution. We should take sensible precautions scaled to actual risk and frequency of threats. Not public perception of threats, actuarial data on frequency and severity of threats. This nonsense has become common enough that it happens several times a month in each state and isn't even reported nationally. School attacks of any kind are rare, and we all know what the simplest and most effective countermeasure would be.

JDeko 792
I basically saw it as obama trying to be the "cool uncle." "Hey kid, what happened to you was bullshit. Wanna see the white house?" I mean did he really "earn" a trip? debatable, but its sort of like how the random sad sacks that CEOs happened to stumble across in disguise on "Undercover Boss" got all sorts of awesome free shit. Got 7 kids to take care of in Oklahoma, single mum? too fucking bad because the CEO of Burger King is tramping about in a bad toupee exclusively in Kentucky and is giving the money to a lady with a husband and 1 kid. i think it was a cool thing to do for a kid who's life got turned to shit for a bit, and keep our otherwise moronic president busy for a bit. Personally, I would have asked the kid to show me how it works had I been his teacher. I like seeing kids doing and making things. But yeah, we now live in a world where the fucking liberal media always makes a mountain out of an ant hill. Had this happened in detroit, they would have pushed the "school was concerned" angle. But since it happened in Texas, they push the "islamaphobia" angle. I'm tired of this shit. Many are tired of this shit. I don't give a rats ass if the kid was muslim, christian, Jewish or hindu.

G O B 3,516
Why do the Cops still have jobs? A bomb must have something full of explosives. If a Cop can't tell the difference between a few wires and circuit boards, and an assembelage that has something that COULD have explosives - then they are too STUPID to carry a gun! And DAMNED sure are too stupid to understand the law well enough to enforce it without themselves becoming a 'clear and present' danger to the entire civilian population! PS - they are also TOO STUPID to send a quick cell phone pic to the bomb squad to ask if it COULD be a bomb!
