Any opinions about Rem 700 Long Range in .30-06?

Recommended Posts

A Rem 700 in .308 gives you a shorter, stiffer action and you only  lose about 100 fps in velocity - given a 168gn bullet.

IMHO - the .308 with a 24", 1:10 twist barrel is a better deal if you want to shoot 1,000yds and less...

.30-06 is fine, but I think you'd be happier with a .308 short action.

It sounds like you'd be happier w/ a .308.

If you get a 30.06, stock up on ammo, IMHO.

It may be hard to find, in a pinch.

HA!!! the first calibers to disappear "in a pinch" are the military ones!!! .223/5.56 , .308, and 7.62x39!! 30-06 is Literally Everywhere, and is the most common ammo you see. If you go hunting and lose/forget ammo, you can go to any store or gas station and find 30-06. You will NOT see .308. Also hunting rounds are cheaper in 30-06, than all other hunting calibers, be it , .270, .308(not impressed with hunting) .7mm, .243, and so on. If you are hunting, my 25 years experience shooting big game tells me that the 30-06 is the best over-all, round with a wide range of bullet weights.

I have used .270, .308, 30-06, 30-30, 7mm, 300win mag, .44mag, 12ga. and .243 and IMO 30-06 is the "Go to" round for all of my hunting.

Most gas stations, around here, don't carry any ammo.

I guess if it's commonly used caliber, in your area, then go for it!

You are not crazy for wanting 30-06, great caliber, do load development or find factory ammo that works for you and its a great round, this is the middle between 308 and 300win mag. 308 may not be enough at 500yds and more and the 300 win mag is brutal recoil. It literally is the sweet spot for recoil and power. Also you can load your own and have decent velocity.
