Got out out the range today to test 10.5" AR pistol build. Seems to work OK for the most part. More on that in a bit.

New toy & 'old reliable".

Tactical Machining gen2 80% lower, Anderson upper & BCG, AR/Stoner 10.5" 1:7 melonite coated barrel, AR Gold trigger, PSA combo UPK/LPK, Matrix Arms Victor hand guard, I forget buffer assy, Eotech & Ruger polymer BUIS, DPMS A2 flash hider.

Testing at 100 yards in gusty conditions. (probably 15-25 mph, with a twisty arroyo on one side & ridge on the other, it's not uncommon to have direct headwind at target, full-value crosswind  at 50 yards & direct tailwind at firing position. oy...)

Had 1 each FTF with PPU & Fiocchi 55gr SPs. Fiocchi also failed to lock bolt back on last shot. Brass was dribbling out about 2-1/2' @ 0300. Furthest was about 7' @ 0400 with Federal fusion 62 gr BTSP, which turned in best 2 groups of 2-7/8" & 3-1/16".  (Forgot to take camera & calipers, argh.)

I suspect that it may be borderline under-gassed. Carbine length system, gas port looked about .065-.070", set gasblock at about 1/16'" fwd of shoulder. May have to fit a KX5.

Worked just dandy with cheap wallyworld Federal bulkpack, Perfecta 55 gr FMJ & Wolf Gold 55 gr FMJ. Groups ranged from 4-1/2" with bulkpack, 4" with Perfect & 3-3/4" with Wolf.  Velocities ran 100-125 fps faster than same loads out of PAP M85np.

A real annoyance was that the best load tested for the AR (Fusion 62 gr) is the first ammo that has made my boringly reliable M85 experience a FTF. Will have to try some Federal powershock 55 gr, favorite for M85 in soft-points.

Accuracy-wise, it's just barely better than the PAP. Intrinsic accuracy is easier to access via AR Gold trigger. Weight, with blubbery Eotech fitted & no sling yet is an ounce shy of 6 lbs, 33 ounces lighter than M85 with (8 ounces?!?) sling removed.

Total round-count at this point is about 140. I'll get another couple hundred rounds through it & see if FTF & lockback issues are mitigated as the working parts get to know each other. Then strip it down, figure out recommended markings etching & finish.

  • 2 weeks later...
Well, got out to the range last week to test more factory loads.

Pretty much broken-in now, earlier FTF & lockback failures all cleared up.  Federal Powershok 55gr SPs & cheap [relatively speaking] PPU 75 gr BTHP both working reliably in AR & PAP and approaching 2 MOA  in either.

Got it painted now: avoided the 'kewl' camo scemes & went with ugly/funtional camo. Not a perfect matchfor my AO, but not bad...

Rattle-can & sponge-daub technique. Needs more sand color, I think.
