New to the world of Saiga's!

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!

Just found this forum and figure I would introduce myself. A little back story I am an AR-15/M4/M16 guy (Active Military), its all that I have really known. So I was home on leave recently and my Uncle pulled out his Saiga 7.62 for some plinking fun. I couldn't believe this AK was reaching out 400 yards on a 12" steel plate. Anyway, long story short I ran through a magazine and was hooked! Put my first one on order $575 out the door for a 922r legal conversion with pistol grip, trigger assembly ect. I'm not looking to do much to it but I am looking for some suggestions on a "group" of upgrades. Here is what I want to do: Scope mount- something that holds its zero! I know there are a ton out there but its hard to find something that isn't hit or miss for people saying that it holds its zero. Second a collapsible butt stock. And last a nice Tri- rail that fits with the factory gas tube cover. I appreciate the help ahead of time and thank you! Also look forward to learning as much as I can from you SME's on this forum.

Have a good Holiday!

Welcome to the forum! I'm glad that you were able to see first hand that AK's being "totally inaccurate" is just not true. First things first. Do you have any idea, yet, which optics you're thinking of running? Also, what length tri-rail are you looking for?

RS Regulate side rail scope mounts. I'd say this is #1 for most people. (I've got the 303 with AKR on my .308. I find this allows for a lot of adjustment, but there are others which might suit your needs better.) Midwest and K-VAR also make decent side rails for about a 1/3 of the cost of the RS, but in this case, I really believe you get what you pay for.

As for the tri-rail, I personally have an Ultimak ACR2, and it's held up very well. It extends to the gas block, so it does cover the sling loop and bayonet lug, if you have one, but that's not a huge deal. I stuck a Magpul RSA on mine, and it works great. Ultimak makes several models, so it's definitely worth checking out.

Again, Midwest Industries makes good rails as well, but I'd say most people choose Ultimak. There are others, but my brain is being retarded right now, and I can't think of them.

Lastly, a collapsible stock. I'm assuming you really meant "collapsible" and not "folding" (some people confuse the two). So, just know, if you've still got your stock tang, you have a choice. You can either leave the tang, and use an adapter, or you can cut the tang, and use an internal block. Personally, I suggest leaving the tang because once it's gone, you can no longer use AK stocks on your rifle. Besides, you could pick up something like this and it barely extends beyond the receiver like most adapters would, but still allows for a buffer tube:

Note that is does not include a buffer tube, end plate, castle nut, or stock, and you will have to purchase each separately. You will also need an AR armorer's tool for the castle nut.

If you did mean to say "folding" and not "collapsible" stock, then I'd suggest just looking around. There are many out there. Again, some would require the tang be removed, some would not.

Hope this helps get you started!

The optic on my Uncle's rifle was a Redfield Revolution 2-7x i think 33. I liked this optic because it gave immediate both eyes open sight picture. So to me it seemed pretty good for both quick pull up shots and zooming in to x7 for that 400 yard reach. Plus it seemed to be well built and sturdy. He said he has had his for quite some time and the recoil of the rifle has never messed with it. For the scope mount, and looking at the RS Regulate's you recommended, but am i looking for a lower and an upper for this optic? Say the 303 lower and the AKR upper in order to get a center bore type mount for an optic like the Redfield? The Tri rail you recommended looks great, exactly what I was looking for. All I kept finding was the SGM's and other similar polymer products. The adapter looks good as well, I was trying to find something that I could convert back to if I wanted. I appreciate all the help!

The RS 303 is a somewhat modular piece as it can be coupled with a few different mounts, some of which are specific to certain optics, while others are more universal. The RS AKR falls under the latter category as it is simply a picatinny rail, and is about as universal as one can get. The AKR also allows for adjustment side to side to perfectly line the rail over the center of the bore, so you'll never have an offset optic. I've had this exact setup used with Badger Max 50 30mm rings and an SWFA SS HD 1-6x24 (a good deal of weight) on a Saiga .308, and it holds zero just fine. I've even removed and re-mounted it, and it was still very close to the same point of impact. So, it is a very solid setup. Just be sure you choose decent rings, remember to use some thread locker on the mount screws, properly torque them, and I think you'd really like it.
