HB of CJ 1,263
We have a family tradition going back at least to around 1900 of having plain old boiled black eyed peas with a ham hock, regular boiled grits and whatever available steamed or boiled winter garden greens such as kale, mustard greens, collard greens, even turnip greens if available. It is supposed to bring one luck. What are you having?
Sim_Player 1,939
Black-eyed beans and ham-hock are awesome! I lived in Virginia in my late teens. Lots of calories for a growing boy! Cornish game hens, cornbread stuffing, cranberry sauce, kale salad, last-nights ham, "little smokies" wrapped in a blanket (butter biscuit), store-bought wine, homemade apple and cranberry wine, mashed potatoes and rolls all made the table tonight. It fed 10 people in our little home. I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday! Edited December 26, 2015 by Sim_Player
Spikester 93
Same thing here too, blackeyed peas with smoked hog jowl, turnip greens and turnips boiled soft with lots of butter and a little sugar.
YOT 3,743
Usually turkey for Thanksgiving, ham for Christmas, and prime rib for New Year. For us a boiled dinner is the feast on St.Patrick's Day.
