To think that the carpet cleaners could have just easily gone to someone that didn't have a problem with them, instead sued, and now have a large amount of money for ruining a family, their business, all because the family stood up for their religious beliefs. Dunno. We again have painted ourselves into a very tight corner with slow drying paint. It would at this point probably take a sizeable portion of the voting Oregon population to dig in, bow their necks and become politically active. The problem persists that too many lazy non deserving welfare type people vote and they vote for the chicken in every pot. How can we help the aforementioned cake shop couple? We can start by asking some of the so called major legal organizations for legal help. It appears non has been forth coming so far. Yep ... where is the ACLU? Strange. The entire United States is covered by the Federal Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination by privately owned places of public accommodation on the basis of race, color, religion or national origin. Places of “public accommodation” include hotels, restaurants, theaters, banks, health clubs and stores. Nonprofit organizations such as churches are generally exempt from the law. The cake people saw themselves as a church but the fact that they sold to the general public out of a separate building for that specific purpose put them in jeopardy.
