Intended to take out helicopters my ass, what a crock of crap.

Last I heard they were intended for taking out airliners on approach to airports.

That was one of the last .50cal scare tactics used that I recall.

The ATF needs to be abolished and many many of it's employees, from field agents to heads of administration, charged with a plethora of gun related crimes.

But just like Obama, Hillary and countless other politicians and federal employees, they are for all intents untouchable.

Hell, even if if some one does get charged, they get reprimanded or discharged, hired on elsewhere with what equates to a promotion and pay raise.

A chopper can be taken down with any decent centerfire rifle. Hit the tail rotor, and down it comes.

...or the pilot.

It's not the tool, dumbass. It's the USER.

Then Brian Williams was very lucky indeed.

Brian Williams is lucky in his alternative reality.......

Anything you can get in the engine will take it out, sling shot anyone?

I vaguely recall a documentary about the Apache gunship. "It's resistant to 23mm, highly resistant to 50 caliber and impervious to 30 caliber"

Yeah, right. There's a term probably anyone who's flown into harm's way has used or at least heard: 'The Golden BB.'

Pitch change link damage will take a helo down quick!  Shoot at the main rotor mast.  Hit a PC link and that blade will pitch up 90 degrees and shread itself.  Como wire could easily slice the link tubes.  It's why we have cable cutters mounted on the aircraft.

Engines have armor panels over the compressor/power turbine.  The gearbox is pretty heavy, but if something high speed pops, it'll go like a hand grenade.

Hydraulics ahead of the main rotor mast can bring large helos down quick too.  UH-1's must land ASAP if hydraulics take a hit, as the forces needed to control it are too great for the pilot to handle manually.

Fuel tanks are self sealing.

Tail rotors can cause problems during hover, but if moving the horizontal and vertical stabilizers will have enough airflow to keep the aircraft straight.  The pilot can do a run-on landing and grind the pads off the skids.  Cool to watch a run-on landing at night!  Putting a good dent into the tailboom's stressed skin construction would work better than a bullet.  A dent on the tailboom would cause it to fold in flight.  Beanbag or baton round would work great.

There's a lot of shit to stop rounds comming at the pilots.  Side, rear, and seat bottom armor panels.  The instrument panel has a lot of metal to try to punch through. You only have an "F" type silouette max above the panel to hit. (head & shoulders)

Most US helos are built to withstand a 23mm hit in vital areas.

A Barrett M82/107 is worrisome as to power, but it's not built as an antiaircraft gun, and it's only AA role would be targeting hovering helos.  I'd be more worried about a tripod or pintal mounted M2.

Just another example of Obama's untouchables (Holder) not just selling some cheap pos, but some more extensive weapons. For all we know 'El Chapo' may have requested it, not just one of those guns that mysteriously filtered down to his hands.  Once upon a time Ollie North got his ass handed to him for something more or "less" along the same lines....Holder, not so much.
