Help!!! Century Arms Fury 12G (Catamount Fury) Best 12 Gau

Recommended Posts

I bought a Century Arms Catamount Fury (since Saigas were an arm and a leg) in December. It would not cycle no matter what I did, and the dust cover broke off. Well sent it back to Century Arms, and finally got it back. The paperwork says they used Noble 12g 00 Buck to test with 10 rounds.

My question is, since it is very similar to the Saiga, what 00 buck do you use? It needs broken in, so I need good 00 buck. I looked for Noble and it is expensive as hell. And I hear it is not that good. Many in forums suggest Win 209. But they do not have the picky Russian clones.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I love my girl, but she is picky as my prom date many years ago... LOL

It is very disappointing that no one is helping.. They just say sell it and get a viper... I did not ask your opinion of the gun.. Many find it reliable.. Are most Saiga and Viper owners rude that tell you to sell your gun?? I am very disappointed and think this forum is full of bullies of owners that own something other than Vipers!!!!

Lube the action with Remington 40X Bore Cleaner or JB Bore Paste, then hand-cycle the action until it smooths out. Both products contain a mild abrasive that will polish mating surfaces and smooth out rough areas without burning up $200 worth of ammo.

You would use the same system as with any other gun. Work out what the weakest ammo it runs is using a chart like this:

post-17871-0-72025600-1461106223_thumb.jpg

If you unscrew the plug you will see that parts of it block the opening to the gas port. The one facing the gas port is the one that counts. So if you have it set to the notch that blocks the port the least, that is the correct setting for your very weakest ammo. When you try a new kind of ammo to you, Always start on the most restrictive, then open it up a notch at a time until the ammo runs. That's the setting for that particular shell.

Set your gun at the most wide open of it's gas settings, by running the gas plug all the way in, then backing it out to the correct notch. Now bring some ammo such as federal feild and target in 2 3/4 dr eq, 3 dr, eq and 3 1/4 dr. eq. If your gun flawlessly cycles the ammo at 3.25 but fails to eject on 3, then you either need to do action work, or just always buy 3.25 or hotter based on the chart. Or maybe it runs 3, but not 2.75.... Some cheap brands are a little weaker than they say, so you might need to buy those brands a notch higher on the chart than normal.

Then run only stuff hotter than that. I probably wouldn't run many 3" magnums in the catemounts though. I think that is asking for premature failure after looking at some of the castings.

FYI, buckshot, if it is true OO, is 1/8 oz per pellet. Therefore the standard 9 pellet load is 1 1/8 oz of shot. Some brands like Remington tend to use shot that is smaller than true OOB. For most shotguns in this category you will need to run 9pellet OOB loads at 1200 FPS or faster. 8 pellet loads at 1245, etc, (That's assuming a gun that runs 3 dram. If yours needs 3.25 dr, eq, follow the numbers for that tier.)

Tactical, Law Enforcement, Reduced Recoil, etc. are all euphemisms for reduced power. These tend to suck for a variety of reasons. Many of them don't admit their pitiful velocities, but they tend to be around 1100 FPS, and often also reduce the payload to 8 pellets (1 oz). This is dumb, and you can expect them not to cycle. Besides your semi auto shotgun puts some of that recoil into cycling the action. I think you will find that full power 9 pellet OOB at 1325 FPS- i.e. standard feild loads are easier to handle in your kitty than the wimpified "tactical" loads in a fixed breach gun like a pump.

For home defense, I suggest getting a more optimum load such as #4 buck at 1350-1400 FPS or #1 at ~1325 FPS. They have far more pellets in a better pattern and have optimum penetration, unlike OOB.

Many in forums suggest Win 209.

That is actually a designation of a Primer.

Winchester AA is a good brand of birdshot loads, but look at the numbers more than the brand. If you buy low recoil AA you will have a bad time. If you buy full power AA, you will have a good time. Winchester Universal, is kinda junk and you probably will have to buy it a notch hotter than it's box says to be reliable.

First off, I directly answered your primary question with an ammo recommendation for breaking the action in.

Second, I, nor anyone else gave you a direct opinion of your gun, nor told you to sell it.

I told you what I would do, and others agreed with one or both of my opinions.

Yes, it was an indirect slam, but frigging eh, does it really bother you that much?

When you ask questions in an open public forum you should be prepared for all sorts of answers/questions, some good, some bad and some not worth reading.

No one has been rude to you, or bullied you.

Learn the difference, then you might be able to hang out here and have fun.

The family here can bicker and be a bit dysfunctional, but all in all they're good folks here.

I've often told new people to have a thick skin here, cause the moderation is very light and almost anything goes.

This is not a politically correct place and people often disagree or just not like each other, which is why we have a sub-forum such as the Fight Club.

Now, I'll show you a rude and bullying troll, with the usual bad spelling, grammar and all.

I hope you and others see my humor for what it is.

You guys should meet Mr. Todd Curtis, aka sixshooter, https://www.facebook.com/toddcrauch?fref=nf

He posed this same question on Saiga Owners United on Facebook, and was told numerous times to sell his gun and buy other options, e.g. DDI, Saiga or Vepr12 haha.gif  He got his dick in a knot there too.

Derek Buckner Get your money back. There not worth the trouble. They really are a cheaply made Chinese AK. Ddi imports some other Chinese AK shotgun and builds off it I think. It's called a ddi 12 if I remember right. Takes saiga mags and handguards ar15 stocks and AK pistol grips. Saiga muzzle breaks and gas pucks and plugs the same as a saiga. They go for about 600$

Derek Buckner I thought because it was Chinese it would be good quality like a norinco. I was wrong. There just not worth the effort. It will be a money pit by the time you invest all the money into it you will have wished you got something better to start.

Matt Toney Good reviews on ddi. And they have ar style safteys and left handed charging handles

Todd Curtis I asked what shells you use... Not to bash the gun!!!! Many have had good results with the gun!!!!!

Todd Curtis If your not going to help then dont comment!!!

Todd took his toy and ran home, but the comments kept coming.

just bought a catamount fury 1 today when it gets here I'll see what I got for my $398.95. most of the saigas and veprs I've been seeing are going for at least twice that or more so it's a crap shoot. see if I got one of the ones that work or a Chinese version of a vodka special. figure I needed a project gun to play with, hope I don't have to work at it to make it run because for the first year the warranty is going to do the lifting not me. oh I'll clean and deburr as needed try a spring or 2 but not getting into gas blocks and such. after the year is up then I look at conversions or what ever else on the gun 1st is just to have a working gun. time will tell.

1st photo it's a cat (catamount) thing.

2nd photo seems like sometimes it doesn't work out for everyone.

at just under $400 and seeing the other threads here and watching Greg's videos at CSS it seemed to me this gun was worth a look. I'll make a call on to keep it or move to get my money back on a resale pretty quick. I'm in my 60s so chances are even a china made gun could last me the rest of my life plus I just wanted a new toy to play with.

sixshooter seems to have never had to deal with something new that didn't work as he expected it to right out of the box. the fact he went to saiga sites shows he may not understand the world of forums.

if the new gun will cycle a good buckshot load or slug reliably you have a starting point to work from, if you want to try. If it will cycle a good game load of birdshot (1255 fps) you've got a gun that while it might be nice if it cycled wally world cheapest crap ammo you can't really complain about. if you want something that shoots any ammo get a single shot.

while I do believe saigas are better than these furys lest we forget every saiga made did not thrill the new owner in the beginning I had at least one that was a pain in the butt to get to cycle till I got the gas block off and poked 1 more gas port. for now these are what's available:

You are right about that 4th Doctor.

My 1st saiga took 30 bux in dremmel polishing and about 150.00 in the cheapo wally world ammo before it functioned as it was supposed to.

The 2nd one I currently own ran right out of the box with the reliability of a single shot but the ability of mag feed.

In other words it did work without even a break in. Fed every shot and went bang every time.

I was fully prepared though to do the work on it that I did on the 1st one.

When I looked at the fury it was 600.00 the Saiga was 1100, for a extra 500 bux I just figured it was worth it since both were right there on the shelf.

Not knock'n that fury but I'm a firm believer in buy once cry once and I was/did send out a F1 for it so that was a deciding factor too.

In other words the saiga has EVERYTHING made for it and a really really HUGE fan base to fix/tinker with it.

Not to mention the companies like Tromix and CSS that are supporting it.

That was worth the extra coin to me.

Rich
