kresk 10,063
I have a Saiga-12 from EAA with a barrel that measures 23". The receiver is marked showing it has a full choke (F1,0). There is no obvious narrowing at the end of the barrel internally. Is this thing slowly tapered to full choke? Input from those more knowledgable appreciated. Edited February 25, 2006 by tritium
mopeman 0
Yes, it is slowly(kind of) tapered at the end of the barrel. If you can fit your little finger in the end of it you will be able to feel the taper of the choke. You might also be able to see it in the right light, it's there, trust me. OK....about the last (not quite) 3/4" of barrel. Pretty subtle. Doesn't seem much of a diameter chage, but it's there. Thanks!
Cobra 76 two 2,677
Drop a small tape measure (or a cleaning rod) down your barrel against the closed bolt and measure to the end of the barrel. If it is really a full 23" (not 22 7/8") then you may have one that used to be 24" and was cut back. In this case it would not be a full choke. If it was imported by EAA then it is probably a full choked 22" (actually 22 7/8") and should have a taper to full starting about an inch from the muzzle. One way to tell for sure is try and fit a dime inside the muzzle. If it won't go in, it's full.
6500rpm 670
Use the dime trick, quick and easy. A dime will fall all the way through a cylinder bore (0.0) with ample room around the diameter, will almost pass or barely pass through a (0.5), and will not pass-stops an inch or so before the end of the barrel on a full (1.0) choke. Bvamp 604
yeh a dime will also pass an improved cylinder as well. I never tried it with a modified choke, but it definately will not pass a full choke.
kresk 10,063
Dime NO go. Must be the model you described Cobra. Thanks gents for the responses. Relatedly, given full choke, is this thing safe to shoot slugs? I've seen conflicting advice. Thanks.
Bvamp 604
yeh its fine to shoot hollow core slugs like the common remington domers.
