Say Goodbye to Flying With Guns

Recommended Posts

This is a 1-in-a-billion event.  That somebody flies with a gun in a checked bag and then immediately takes that gun and starts shooting people as soon as he gets off the plane.  The kind of thing you can't possibly predict, and can't realistically prevent without draconian measures way out of proportion with the likelihood of the crime you intend to prevent.

But of course the reaction will be overreaction, as usual for any crime with a gun.  Well, unless that crime is done by an oppressed victim of color...  But that's another topic.

My prediction:  Every airline will have new policies by the end of the month.  No more guns in checked bags.

Which is stupid of course, because baggage claim is completely unsecure.  Anybody can bring anything in to baggage claim.

This will just affect hunters and competitive shooters who fly with guns.

Anybody who wants to shoot up a baggage claim at the airport can simply bring a gun and a bunch of loaded mags in a suitcase to the airport and do their thing.  Nothing unusual about people going to the airport with suitcases and nobody checking suitcases going in or out of baggage claim.

But that's logic and the world runs off of lawyers and frightened sheep.

As I write this the airline lawyers are writing the new rules.  Count on it.

More likely you will be escorted to your car after collecting.

I just read that his residence recently is down here in Naples Fl .

They are still not sure if he was even on a plane. Or checked a gun.

Even if he did not fly or check the gun he used ,I agree flying with your gun is gone.

Also one witness said the bags just started to come,so how could he have gotten his bag go to the John load the gun come out shooting?

That's interesting, my first thought when I heard this story was, I wonder if this idiot was even on a plane.

I doubt the airlines will be willing to give up the billions $$ in revenue by forcing gun carrying passengers to find other means of transpo.

Again, will we even be told the complete truth by our biased media?  I have a gut feeling the guy was "programed".  But by whom and why?

I'm sick of people like this reducing the liberties of the American Citizens who have absolutely no intention of committing acts like this. They need to know everyone around them could be armed and there is only one way to do that. We have the right to defend ourselves in a lawful manner, yet we are left defenseless in so many places. Gun free zones are not working for anyone except those who intend to act on a bunch of sitting ducks.

I'm guessing people will now be escorted out of the airport if they check in a firearm. The media is trying to blow this out of proportion as usual. I'm sure first thing Monday Fineswine will propose another assault weapons ban just because.

Yeah, I'm sure that ignorant bitch will be ranting about the "folding assault rifle with the 600-round drum clip and the thing that sticks down that he smuggled in, in his shirt pocket!"

Just another Aloha Snackbar fanatic with a gun/knife/bomb who "misunderstands" the Koran.

Nothing to see here. Move along. It's those peaceful Muslim terrorists again.

"Officials told The New York Times that Santiago had visited the FBI office in Anchorage in November 2016 and reported hearing voices in his head telling him to commit acts of violence but also saying that he was in control and did not intend to hurt anyone. They also stated that he had viewed material by terrorist groups on the internet.[4] Officials later told The Associated Press that during his visit, he had also claimed that the US government was controlling his mind and making him watch videos by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.[16] He had also reportedly stated that the CIA was forcing him to join the group.[16] Authorities urged the man to seek mental health treatment.[4] Local media in Alaska reported that the Qupqugiaq Inn, a motel in midtown Anchorage, was evacuated as part of the investigation into Santiago. Authorities would not specify what connection the suspect had to the lodge.[17] His family members stated that he had become mentally ill after his tour in Iraq and had recently received psychological treatment following a number of incidents.[18]"

Why not simply allow the airlines to run a zip tie through the frame and barrel?

Better to simply allow unrestricted armed travel. If a wolf is surrounded by other wolves, he has no sheep to attack.

I feel SO SAFE, knowing that the FBI did not even enter him in the list of prohibited insane people who should not have a gun! Nice laws, but the .gov bunch never bother to follow up!

The  shooting occurred in the baggage area.

Anyone could walk into that unsecured area from the street, pull  a gun out and shoot just as many people.

I hate when the media omits the details.

I really do not know what to make of this one, seems all too ... well yall know what I mean.

A lot of them have had that feeling of late, maybe it's just me but I doubt that.

In short I am hesitant to believe anything from current sources.

Due process.  They can't just stick somebody on the list because they think he should be there, and this is a good thing.  There are specific criteria that have to be met before somebody can become a prohibited person for mental reasons.  Especially in the case of somebody who seeks help on his own initiative as this nutcase muslim seems to have done, we don't want to punish people (and in this case a veteran) for seeking help by automatically stripping them of their rights, or else people will be afraid to seek help in the future.

It seems likely that the ball may have been dropped somewhere in terms of actually following the process, or that the timeline was too short for the process to run its course.

Anti-gunners are going to be anti-gunners and spew anti-gun bullshit any chance they can get. To me this guy is like the new poster child of our failed mental health system. He's obviously sick. He knows he's sick. He asks for help but nobody really seems to pay any attention to the guy until he's at the airport shooting people at random.

that would not fit the agenda of the current regime. I hope things change, in a good way.

"I am hearing voices telling me to go all jihad". "that's OK son, here is your gun back. It is obvious to the FBI that you do not pose a danger..."

He should have went in there and said he was a Trump supporter and he wanted to go jihad. It would have been the main news story for weeks and he would be wearing a nice jacket with lots of pretty polished stainless buckles.

Not to derail the thread, but It has been a while since I have seen you around. I hope things are great for you.

The cheapest way for me to get ammo in Alaska is to buy it from SGammo and have it shipped to family in the lower 48.  I either have them fly it back checked or I come down there and fly it back myself.  Alaska Airlines allows 50 lbs checked on domestic flights.  That's roughly 1-1/2 cases of 7.62x39. Doing it this route I average roughly $275 a case.  Fuck, golden tiger isn't even available up here. If Alaska Airlines changes it's ammo policy gun owners in Alaska are going to take it hard.  I think the last time I bought 7.62x39 from an Alaskan vendor it was a case of Brown Bear for $450.  Those prices are plain stupid.

What HPD said.  We won't see guns or ammo in checked baggage banned for at least the next 4 years, but that being said it would certainly fuck Alaskans.  As it is, I have heard that we will no longer be allowed to travel domestically without a passport due to our state having told the feds to take their "Real ID" act and shove it.  In other words, won't be able to get on an airplane to fly from one state to another.  Not sure how much truth there is and I suspect the state will cave before it gets to that.

I did some quick googling and I learned that Florida is one of the only states, and maybe THE only shall-issue CCW state that prohibits CCW in the UNSECURED area of an airport.  It's no big surprise that shitbird left a state where there are few places he could have tried what he did without getting ventilated by a lawful CCWer, and flew all the way across the country to probably the ONE state where the unsecured part of the airport terminal is a "gun-free" zone, and yet where checking firearms to would not raise any red flags.  In fact, it's now being reported that he may have planned a trip to New York instead, which he canceled.  He must have realized that having declared, checked firearms in his baggage would end with him being arrested on the spot when he tried to claim them.

I honestly feel a little sorry for the guy because he knew he was having issues and he tried to get help while he was still somewhat in control, and they decided that he wasn't mentally ill (wouldn't want to be the shrink who made THAT call right about now) and let him go.  Obviously the shouting in his head got to be too much for him.

Also HPD, sometimes Alaskan Ammo on Commercial Drive near the AIH gets Golden Tiger in stock.  I bought a case of the 7.62x39 last fall and it was expensive...  I think $350 for 1000 rounds.  I would have waited but I don't have any travel planned and the election was coming up.  My brother is lucky in that his inlaws live out of state so he can get them to bring up ammo when they visit.  Sometimes I can piggyback a little onto his, but asking somebody else to bring a 1000 round case up for you is pushing it.
