.223 verses 7.62x39

Recommended Posts

I'm considering another AK, but in .223. I'm hoping for a bit more accuracy and range. On a similar note, can the .223 reliably drop a deer as can the 7.62x39.

Think that depends on how good a shot you are really....the .223 has less energy due to the smaller bullet of course, but i know people who have taken deer with a .22 mag with complete reliability (some very poor family friends in a rural setting who for a while lived pretty much only on deer.....) so yes i think you could reliably take deer with a .223 if you are a good shot with discipline to wait for a good shot to present itself.

if you are hunting in heavier brush, you will want the 7.62...bullet won't deflect off of every little trig in the way....as a .223 slug might.

Hi

I have a ballistic chart that compares 7.62x39 with .223 rem (although there is a typo) and it shows that 7.62x39mm has superior power (energy) than .223 at all ranges in the graph but of course the trajectory is much more pronounced. personally i dont like .223 but many others do and swear by it so go and get a few opinnions before you buy and remember buy what you like not what others like.

Many states won't let you legally hunt large game with 223. Even though the ballistic tip bullets change the dynamic of transferable energy on a 223, I would not hunt deer with one personally.

But as far as shooting, the 223 is a better round for accuracy and flatter trajectory than the x39, especially with cheap off the shelf ammo.

But to compare the 2 against each other really depends on what you want to do with it, not what other people think of the particular round.

For deer hunting I would give the edge to the 7.62x39. You can get the CorBon 150 grain ammo that does about 2300 fps. There are some deer bullets for the 223 and the 64 grain Winchester ammo is designed for this use. I would still rather have the penetration of the heavier bullet. The Saiga 7.62x39 is the most accurate x39 that I have shot. Havent tried the 223 but someone here can advise on that.

With my 20" Saiga X39, I CONSISTENTLY shoot 2"- 2.5" groups with 10 rounds with the iron sights at 100M!!!!

That is CERTAINLY good enough for deer hunting at that range or closer... and with the irons... no fogging, no fumbling for a good sight picture, no "looking for the brown spot in the crosshair... no "bump/whack ... oops its wrong"... you point, aim, kill... no sweat!!!

Well, I think the .223 should mainly be used for varmint hunting, most people I know use this caliber for coyotes, coons, even wild pig, .223 remington is well known for flat shooting is a small bullet with a lots of powder so it will have more accuracy at 200 yds compared to the heavier x39, but energy wise the x39 delivers more punch. Is like comparing a 17 mach 2 to a 22 magnum if you are familiar with rimfires, if you want to shoot medium size game x39 is good, if you want for target, range and varmint the .223 is your caliber. I watched a show the other day on ballistics, and they compared the 7.62x39 to the .223 rem in a comparison on damage to a human target during war time, the 7.62 goes in an it tumbles across the mass causing trauma, the .223 goes in and it fractures causing more severe trauma. The same thing with game the varmint you don't usually eat the meat so it don't really matter what damage is done, a deer well you want a clean shot to the heart lung area, enough penetration and controlled expansion, so you won't damage the meat. But I rather use a .270 for game, saiga doesn't really fall in the hunting rifle category, it is more a target, range, fun category. just my 2 cents :killer:
