Ronin38 2,117
How do you like that? Right after I make a joke about them having an accident... Boom! Right on schedule!
patriot 7,197
I wonder if it was "helped along" by a high-intensity IR laser hit? ....say from a satellite we didn't launch in the 1980s?
Ronin38 2,117
We can neither confirm nor deny that any such satellite may or may not have been launched, nor that it may or may not have any such hypothetical capability. As far as you know...
XD45 7,124
IR laser from orbit? Nah. Too much attenuation in the atmosphere at IR wavelengths. There are wavelengths that zip through the atmosphere with no problem. Just sayin.

Sabotage is another possibility, although not as likely as pure incompetence.
Capt Nemo 882
If I remember right 10.7um has no problems. (CO2 mainline) Near IR might.
essohbe 47
I remember other people that weren't me making small thermobaric "fireworks" in the backyard. They consisted of an atomized particle explosion timed by a second charge which shoved the initial pressure wave outward. A very small one was enough to blow the camera over and knock down stuff a couple yards away.

Yeah a quick look at the chart shows 10.7 sits at a sweet spot with around 30% atmospheric attenuation. That's probably acceptable loss.
