Replace FSB or just thread the barrel

Recommended Posts

I recently picked up a nice Saiga in 5.45.  It was converted by RWC and is in excellent shape.  I have a few questions.

1. Which is preferred, replacing the FSB or removing the barrel shroud and hoping its threaded?

2. Is there a sure fire way to know if its threaded underneath?

3. If replacing the FSB is the way to go which do you recommend.

4. If replacing is the best option who do you guys suggest do it?  Legion is all booked up for fiscal year 2017.  I live in Southern MN.

I tried to upload a picture but I kept getting Error The server returned an error during upload.

I have not heard of any 5.45s being factory threaded under the FSB, only x39.

If it were me I would replace the FSB and gas block with a Bulgarian. It will allow you to mount the cleaning rod and bayonet as well. Is your FSB and GB on the Saiga dimpled or not? If dimpled, it will make the process more difficult, and you may want to pay to have it done. If they are not, drive out the pins remove the Saiga factory ones and replace with the Bulgarian. The pin alignments should match up. Process took about 45 minutes in my garage IIRC.

ETA.. I received the error message too when trying to upload a pic of the Bulgarian blocks in my S223

Right now to give you a good picture, it has the full zukov hand guard.  The really long one.  I absolutely love that hand guard. I also have a Zukov side folding stock.  I love the look, mostly Im just looking to have a decent muzzle brake put on and a little flash reduction.  Other then that, the rifle, to me, is darn near perfect.  I would another picture I am still getting the error message.

And I believe that the current gas block is dimpled.  So I will have to have a local gunsmith do it.  I only hope they know how to work on AKs..Lots of AR snobs around here. I just have to find a nice Bulgarian FSB.

If you are going to keep the Magpul furniture on it and you love it, then I wouldn't worry about replacing the FSB. Remove the current FSB and thread it. If all you want is a decent flash hider muzzle break, then the DIY thread kits from Carolina Shooters Supply or similar vendors here will fit your needs wonderfully. The only reason I would replace the GB and FSB is if I wanted the gun in original configuration.

If you do decide to go the Bulgarian route, APEX has them both right now in stock. A little pricy, but they are getting harder to find. Good luck

I appreciate the heads up.  This rifle was a steel.  Picked it up for 700 with 3 circle ten mags and 800 rounds of silver bear ammo.  I was looking at the UTG Pro Gen 4 side scope mount but it looks a little high for me...Any thoughts? When I say high i mean it sits a little high not the cost.

I think spacehog means Midwest Industries.

Depending on what optic you want to use, you can get pretty low with RS Mounts. They might seem a little pricey but you pay for the quality.

Thank you. That is correct. Midwest Industries not Midway. I have both the RS and the UTG Pro, and the RS is very nice indeed.
